Kris, badly injured at the end of Undaunted (2009), is put in charge of a squadron on anti-pirate duty on the Rim. Unsurprisingly, they soon encounter pirates aplenty and a planet that’s been taken over by former members of Peterwald Security. Kris can’t leave injustice alone, and soon enough, what was supposed to be a relief-and-recon assignment turns into a full- fledged military mission. The main problem here is that series fans will have no trouble predicting what happens next; the plots are remarkably similar to previous entries, and there is limited character development. The one exception is the inclusion of Kris’ hereditary enemy Lieutenant Vicki Peterwald. She and Kris must combine their forces to take down the pirate headquarters, and their time together leads to some interesting revelations on the state of internal affairs in the Peterwald Empire. While series fans will be happy to follow Kris’ latest adventure, this isn’t the place for new readers to start. --Jessica Moyer

Mike Shepherd walks back from the abyss of a pending alien invasion to settle at least some of the bloodlust of the Longknife/Peterwald war for a while. He gives you a changing view of new players and the building of new alliances and relationships and sets the stage for possible new story lines.
When reading a long series you have to take the long view of a storyline and there will be books that bridge gaps and string together separate lines into the whole.
It is a good story, not a great one, but, it fills the bill of preparing the reader for what is to come. If you are following this series, you should certainly read this episode. I would NOT recommend it for anyone starting with this author as it isn't a "best effort" as much as a "tune in next week (book) for the real exciting adventure - but in the mean time, enjoy this interlude".
. In this episode Kris joins forces with the enemy of her enemy, continues to developer a relationship with her enemy.
This was a another fun adventure in a very entertaining series of books. I couldn't put it down until I was finished with it. Some readers were disappointed that the book didn't go to all the places they wanted to go... or contunue some of the more interesting story lines from the last book... but this series has some long legs and I expect those other story lines to be explored over the coming years. We should be reading about 'those Longknifes' for some time to come.

I love each book and each character as they all grow through out the series.
