Regretfully, I must recommend against this book until a corrected edition comes out.
Note: It seems from a note at the end of the book that the author has left his former publisher and struck out on his own. I hope he quickly figures out how to get back to the level of publishing quality of his previous books or he will lose at least one faithful reader.
Update: 1/14/17. The book description was modified this morning to say that the problem was fixed. So, I bought the book again. For the fourth time. Then I downloaded it. Guess what: I got the sample version, again. I have been an Amazon customer since, like, 1997, and this is the biggest kerfuffle I have had with them. Oh, and interestingly enough, I am no longer presented with the option to return the book, so I guess I will keep the sample. :-)
Update: 1/15;/17. I got the correct version. It just appeared. Hooray!!!
In this Admiral Santiago continues the family curse. Following the Longknives and fighting. She's off across the galaxey to relieve Kris Longknife. On arrival, she gets little time to learn what is going on before she's off to fight. Having read the Kris Longknife books I'd gotten use to how things had developed and the reasons for them. Sandy Santiago is by the book and determined to not get pulled into the troubles Longknifes find so easy. Adjusting to the realities and general non Navy ways of her assignment is enough to drive one around the bend.
As for the book, I think it is good for what it is, but needed a low and high level edit pass yet. On the high, the ending is not as clean or leading into the next sequence as I'd like and Mike has a repeating habit as constant as Santiagos sacrificed to Longknives.
On the low, plenty of word substitution typos, and Mike has plenty of places where which character is which is misattributed or muddled.
Before anyone goes on about independent vs pro house, the latest 163X book I bought had 70% italics, so he's not far from parents on QC these days.
Still a decent read, marred by that horror of a SNAFU. Hopefully he'll be able to use this as his own "shakedown" cruise.
For those that have read the Vicky Peterwald branch of the Longknife Universe, this is yet another similar branch to that same Universe - a Santiago branch thereof. Should you be interested in more details - then you need to purchase this first title in this Santiago branch of the Longknife Universe.
The writing made me think the book was rushed to publication just a little, and could have used just a little more time with editing and proof reading compared to previous books by this author.
