# times used: several hundred
I rode my bike daily to the TX Med Center in Houston and would lock my bike outside one of the busiest public hospitals. Sometimes I left my bike in areas with very little security surveillance and several times I left it overnight. I am happy to report that my bike was never stolen or tampered with.
This is a formidable looking lock, which I'm guessing is a theft-deterrent in itself. I like the heavy-duty chain enclosed by the thick black sleeve that says "KRYPTONITE." The heavy-duty locking mechanism is tuned nicely so that there is no doubt whether it is locked or unlocked. The extra key is nice to have as a backup, I even registered mine so that I can order more in the future if I lose one.
I have used this lock over and over again and have exposed it extreme heat and humidity as well as torrential rainfall and yet it still seems to work as well as when it was brand new. I did my research before buying a bike lock and this is the type and brand that I decided upon; obviously I am happy with my decision. For maximum security I would recommend using two different types of locks, such as a chain (like this one) and a solid bar. That way, a bike thief will have to use two different tools to get to your bike. That being said, most of the time I had no worries about securing my bike with this chain only.
I would not recommend this product to anyone.
I have owned the Keeper 785 for 4 years and NO problems with the locking mechanism sticking or becoming stiff. I do regular lubrication of the lock to keep it working smoothly. I am amazed of some the comments saying that they are having problems with lock becoming stiff or frozen. My only conclusion is that they leave the lock in wet weather, and do not clean, maintain or oil the lock.
This Keeper 785 is a good compromise size. It weighs 2 pounds 13 ounces (1276 grams). It is not heavy compared to other chains, U-locks, or other locking systems. I carry the keeper around my hips/waist and it is comfortable while I ride. For waist wearing, a modified aluminum carabiner and split rings are used to attach together, the chain end & lock shackle (see photos). Again ... a reasonably good lock/chain that is lighter in weight than other lock systems, and has the appearance of 'quality & toughness' to deter the 'casual' bike thief.
The one issue that most bring up is the locking mechanism, well mine works great. Yes, the lock is kinda heavy, but is that not what you want in a lock? I sure do. If it were light, it would be easy to break or cut thru. This thing is a beast. Or is it?
I came out of the house to find my daughters bike missing. The lock was left there, laying on the ground where her bike had been. It looks as though the thief burned the cover and then cut the lock off of her bike. I am sure this took some time, but this is a public area and they were able to just ride away with it, so I no longer feel so good about this lock.
I have always held the belief that if someone wants something bad enough, they will find a way to get it, so I guess that is what happened here. I have attached photos for you to see what they did to this lock.
I am not certain I would buy this lock again. I have lost faith in Kryptonite as a leader in bicycle security.

update nearly 10 months use and the lock jammed , well taken care of but still 10 months that's a bit of a bummer, luckily it jammed at home other wise that would of been trouble, under these circumstances can not recommend this lock look else wear you can get a lot better than this.
Update: can't even unlock my bike now...
The build quality is exceptional with an all round heavy feel for added durability and strength.
I came from using U/D locks to this heavy chain metal lock which is very convenient when travelling short distances as I can just wrap it around my bike frame. The smooth yet effective fabric around the chain allows protection towards the frame and no scuffs or scratches will occur.
Overall this bike lock is a good 10/10 from me and I especially like the three colours available but this red is too good.
Thanks Kryptonite , will definitely be buying from them again !
The key can be a bit tricky to get to turn, but in my case all I need to do is give it some WD40 once or twice a year. Also, the lock and the chain can be a bit hard to align, when locking it, and I ended up cutting off a bit of the rubber around the slot in the locking cylinder to make it a bit easier.
Finally, the chain is long enough to lock my bike to most objects around town. I feel like it's a good compromise and wouldnt want it any shorter, but also not longer as the weight would be too high. All in all, it's a great lock so far!
UPDATE (APRIL 2020): Lock is still working without issue. Again, make sure to give it a bit of oil once in a while. But that's about it.
UPDATE (March 2018): The lock is still going strong and everything still works fine. I continue to give it a bit of oil once in a while (WD40). Other than that, I've had no issues.
I am motorcycler. I had to return the chain because it looked too thin at 7mm thickness on my motorcycle. Upgraded to 10mm thickness evo series 4 1090.
Just be careful with the tamper proof locking mechanism and you will be fine. Make sure you have put the key in all the way before turning. Apply some grease inside the barrel and mechanism and it will last a long time.
I am sure this is a good product with silver rating just that I needed a gold rating chain lock. Nothing is unbreakable locks are deterants.
These lock mechanisms get a bit rough after time and you would be advised to get Abus Lock Lubicant as WD40 will further gum it up over time attracting dust and crud...I lube it at least once a month. I think without doing that, it is not the easiest to open or close, judging by the way it gets before lube time.
Has a limited theft warranty guarantee if you send it in, though I'm sure there will be small print exclusions.
Wear it round my neck like a proper bike monkey.
Colour - bike monkey RED
The lock mechanism is good: it doesn't lock automatically, so it can't be shimmed. Your bike will never be safe outside (at least not here in Cardiff), but you definitely don't want the easiest to steal bike on the rack. This lock is well worth it!
Edit: After about six months of regular use the mechanism becomes a bit unreliable, you have to fiddle with the key for a minute in order to lock or unlock the mechanism.
Chain quiet short so sometimes difficult to find a suitable place to secure bike to, which is my reason for not giving 5 stars.
