From the acclaimed animation studio LAIKA (Coraline) comes an epic original action adventure featuring the voice talents of Academy Award winners Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey. Kubo mesmerizes the people in his village with his magical gift for spinning wild tales with origami. When he accidentally summons an evil spirit seeking vengeance, Kubo is forced to go on a quest to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father and his mystical weaponry, as well as discover his own magical powers. Kubo and the Two Strings is "a wildly imaginative, magical adventure." – Scott Mantz, Access Hollywood

At the beginning of the film Kubo was consumed with questions of why, as in why was he stuck with such personal sadness; by the end, he found the strength and courage to transition himself to questions of how, as in how to move on from his loss (e.g., his surprising actions and those of the villagers at the end of the film simply reflected how many Asian cultures try to deal positively with personal loss). That really struck a chord with our family, especially with our kids who greatly admired Kubo for his kindness, strength, and dedication to appreciating all that human life has to offer, even if that includes a life of emotional hardship.
With that said I would advise parents to screen the film first before showing it to their kids, in case their kids are not yet mentally and/or emotionally ready to handle such topics. Otherwise, it’s a beautiful film that will surely resonate with its viewers for many years to come.
The animation is wonderful and completely unlike Disney or DreamWorks or anything else. The characters look almost like living paper. Very cool.
Updated: This is Annika again! My mom got the movie for me and my little sister the day it came out streaming. We made Kubo costumes for Halloween. My sister was Elsa but then changed to Kubo at the last minute because she loved the movie so much. The movie keeps getting better every time I watch it. Please let there be a sequel. I wrote the director to ask him to make a sequel. Maybe if we all help out, we can make it happen. Long live Kubo! (Annika, age 10)
"Kubo and the Two Strings" is such a film.
It's a classic hero's journey tale filled with magic, action, tragedy, and moments of pure joy. Its a tale that, while drawing inspiration from countless legends of old, is so fresh and earnest. It truly is singularly exceptional across the board.
In an age of computer wizardry taking over our cinema screens (and there are elements of that here to be sure), it is still refreshing to see an animated film made by true artists and craftsmen. This kind of filmmaking is not made easily or without a substantial amount of love for the craft. Each and every frame conveys their love for the project and you can even hear that love in the voice talent as well. It's art without pretense. I could randomly pick out any single shot from Kubo and frame it on my wall...and be happy to have it there.
I laughed and (yes) cried at all the right points. Kubo hits those marks and tugs the heartstrings to be sure, but it doesn't do so in a ham fisted way. It doesn't shove "the feels" down your throat. Like any great stories, you get there gradually and the story allows you to become invested in these characters (Kubo, Monkey, and Beetle). It's beautifully written and executed.
I know it won't be a theatrical blockbuster, but I would wager that it will rank among the highest family films in history eventually. Movies like "Its A Wonderful Life", "A Christmas Story", "The Iron Giant", "The Shawshank Redemption" come along and fail to impress at the box office..then go on to become timeless classics. Kubo is going to be, unequivocally, among those greats.
My hope is that the BluRay will be chock full of great features and given the special edition release it so rightfully deserves. I'm crossing my fingers for a hardcover digibook release.
The coustumes, and Puppet detail is extreme. Every single frame has 100 percent effort. The plot as well and script does as well. This is one of the best Leika films i have ever seen. Yes i rate it above Paranorman even.
