To address some of the other issues from other reviews:
- I've never had this collaspe on me while pouring. I just assume you gotta be pouring wrong if that happens.
- The water does not just run straight through. At least not if you are using a filter like you are suppose to. To fill my travel mug I have pour it full and then wait for it to filter through and then pour again since it is like 2 cups.
- It does not make weak tasteless coffee. Some people like their coffee so strong it can get up and walk. A great advantage of this to a Keurig is being able to make as strong or as weak of coffee as you like. Obviously if you use more grounds, you get stronger coffee, but I've also found that if you pour a dribble first to wet the grounds, and then pour the Kuke full you get stronger coffee than if you just pour it full to begin with.
Would I buy this again? Only if someone steals mine or it eventually wears out but there is literally not much that can go wrong with it.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes! Absolutely.
I'm not new to pour-over coffee. I've owned a Melitta Ready-Set-Joe coffee cone for several years now. I love it, despite my initial hesitation that it was made out of plastic. I'm the only one at home who drinks coffee, so it's very easy to make a single cup for myself. I got over the fact that it was plastic when I realized that most coffee makers use plastic to hold the grounds as well. But I only make it at home because it's too bulky to bring to work. And I can't leave it at work because I have lost faith in my colleagues not throwing it out. This finally provides an easy way to make coffee at work.
To compare the Kuke with the Melitta, I find that the Kuke is definitely harder to use. That's why it lost one star. First, the Kuke uses size 2 filters whereas the Melitta uses size 4 filters. This is important, because with a size 2, you have to fill the cone with hot water about 3 times before you can make a single mug of coffee. With the Melitta, you can fill it up twice. Pour-over coffee purists will argue that it should be a continuous stream of hot water to keep the water temperature up. I've tried and even have a pour-over coffee pot. It tastes the same.
Second, there is no way to see how much coffee you've already made with a standard, opaque coffee mug. As a result, you have to lift the Kuke up once in a while to make sure it doesn't overflow. The Melitta has a cut-out at the base so you know if you're nearing the top of the mug.
Third, the Melitta has a single hole at the base. If you wet the filter paper first and compress the coffee grounds into the cone, you can control the flow rate through the single hole. Lift up the filter paper a bit and the flow is faster. This lets you have very exact control of how long your coffee brews. With five holes at the base of the Kuke, there is no control of brew time. Nonetheless, the coffee in the end is still good.
I've read lots of weird comments in the reviews section for this item. One person mentions the melting point of silicone being in the thousands (either Celcius or Fahrenheit). That's wrong. It's closer to 300C, but you should never be measuring by melting temperature anyway since leaching can occur below melting point. The recommended temperature on this product is a conservative 350F. Both are still above boiling temp. Another person recommended cutting a single coffee filter into smaller pieces just to cover the holes. This is a horrible idea. A standard size 4 coffee filter costs about half a cent. Using a tiny filter to cover just the holes is guaranteed to get coffee ground sediment into the cup. The paper filter also filters cholesterol and makes clean-up extremely easy. Just use a full-sized coffee filter.
Overall, this is very convenient to bring to work, camping or traveling (to avoid using hotel coffee makers), but the Melitta non-collapsible version works better.
Of note, I received this product for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. If you found this review helpful, please let me know.
