Product Description

The music of Sympozion is a truly original blend of RIO, avant-garde, jazz fusion with elements of chamber music. You could distinguish influences and sounds from Gentle Giant, Camel, National Health, Univers Zero Frank Zappa and many more, but I feel that Sympozion has quite succesfully created a sound of its own, and as a whole, the album flows very smoothly, a highly cohesive ensemble of tracks. One important note I must make is that the group is composed of amazingly talented musicians, playing a combination of brilliant melodies with the more complex elements of RIO, the richness of their sound comes from the multiple layers of rhythms and harmonies, becoming deliciously overwhelming at times. Musically, there is so much happening on this album that you'll need many auditions of this CD to catch all the yummy musical bits and subtleties throughout it. The compositions are mostly instrumental, with two tracks (Bird and Zona) sung in hebrew.

Review

What a great musical discovery! Sympozion is a group from Israel that has been together for a couple of years, but just recently released their first album, entitled Kundabuffer, attracting the attention of the international music community in the process. The originality of their music and the richness of their sound makes them a group in a class of their own. This album was released quite early in the year and already many people are talking about the best new group of the year, top twenty prog album material and so on. Let me add my voice to all this talk: A brilliant album unlike anything I have heard in a long time! --progmontreal.com

I heard 30 seconds of their first track on myspace and came right here to buy it before the song even finished! This band is the next best thing since Gentle Giant and National Health. No review needed. Listen to them on myspace, return here and buy it. It will stretch your ears so wide that your brain will fall out.

Sympozion's 52-minute debut disc is proof that well written instrumental music still exists. They have their own sound but it's obvious that National Health had a big influence on them. Two songs are sung in Hebrew, but vocals are not their strength so it's wise they limited them. The lineup is - keyboards, two guitarists, bass, and drums. The flute and recorder accent a couple of songs.

Man these cats are good and I love this style of music. It's complex but not too avant-garde, energetic, smoothly changes moods and time signatures, and it's melodic. I also like how they combine melodies and syncopation (Gentle Giant were masters at this) to create a thick sound. The audio mix on this is stellar - the separation of guitars and overall balance of the instruments is perfect. If you're a fan of the jazzy Canterbury style of music and think no one writes like that anymore, this is pretty darn close. And if they stick to instrumental's (or get a good singer) I'm sure they'll kick out plenty of killer albums.

Finally, if it weren't for my Amazon friend Warren, I doubt I would have ever heard this. Thanks mate!
