Coiled like a snake at the base of the spine, kundalini is the spiritual force that lies dormant in every human being. Once awakened, often through meditation and yoga practices, it rises up the spine and finds expression in the form of spiritual knowledge, mystical vision, psychic powers, and ultimately, enlightenment.
This is the classic first-person account of Gopi Krishna, an ordinary Indian householder who, at the age of thirty-four, after years of unsupervised meditation, suddenly experienced the awakening of kundalini during his morning practice. The story of this transformative experience, and the author's struggle to find balance amid a variety of powerful physiological and psychic side effects, forms the core of the book. His detailed descriptions of his dramatic inner experiences and symptoms such as mood swings, eating disorders, and agonizing sensations of heat—and of how, with the help of his wife, he finally stabilized at a higher level of consciousness—make this one of the most valuable classics of spiritual awakening available.
“Gopi Krishna was a pioneer in the land of spirituality.” —Deepak Chopra, M.D

"Gopi Krishna never felt that what took place was personally his. From the beginning he was a mere instrument; therefore, at the end, he is merely a mouthpiece for a vaster truth."—James Hillman, author of The Soul's Code --This text refers to the paperback edition.

About the author

Gopi Krishna was born in 1903 to parents of Kashmiri Brahmin extraction. His birthplace was a small village about twenty miles from the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir State in northern India. He spent the first eleven years of his life growing up in this beautiful Himalayan valley.
In 1914, his family moved to the city of Lahore in the Punjab which, at that time, was a part of British India. Gopi Krishna passed the next nine years completing his public school education. Illness forced him to leave the torrid plains of the Punjab and he returned to the cooler climate of the Kashmir Valley. During the succeeding years, he secured a post in the Public Works Department of the state, married and raised a family.
In 1946 he founded a social organization and with the help of a few friends tried to bring about reforms in some of the outmoded customs of his people. Their goals included the abolition of the dowry system, which subjected the families of brides to severe and even ruinous financial obligations, and the strictures against the remarriage of widows. After a few years, Gopi Krishna was granted premature retirement from his position in the government and devoted himself almost exclusively to service work in the community.
In 1967, he published his first major book in India: Kundalini — The Evolutionary Energy in Man. Shortly thereafter it was published in Great Britain and the United States and has since appeared in eleven major languages. The book presented to the Western world for the first time a clear and concise autobiographical account of the phenomenon of the awakening of Kundalini, which he had experienced in 1937. This work, and the sixteen other published books by Gopi Krishna have generated a steadily growing interest in the subjects of consciousness and the evolution of the brain. He also traveled extensively in Europe and North America, energetically presenting his theories to scientists, scholars, researchers and others.
Gopi Krishna’s experiences led him to hypothesize that there is a biological mechanism in the human body which is responsible for creativity, genius, psychic abilities, religious and mystical experiences, as well as some aberrant mental states. He asserted that ignorance of the working of this evolutionary mechanism was the main reason for the present dangerous state of world affairs. He called for a full scientific investigation of his hypothesis and believed that such an objective analysis would uncover the secrets of human evolution. It is this knowledge, he believed, that would give mankind the means to progress in peace and harmony.
Gopi Krishna passed away in July 1984 of a severe lung infection and is survived by his wife, three children and grandchildren. The work that he began is currently being carried forward through the efforts of a number of affiliated foundations, organizations and individuals around the world.

Few would argue that man has not `evolved' to become a being who demonstrates the higher order thinking skills that allow him to problem solve, express creativity and be equipped with the power to comprehend an ever changing environment. This book describes one man's inadvertent `awakening' of Kundalini, which he defines as that "universal and inherent spiritual power" that resides in Homo sapiens, for the purpose of moving us towards an even higher level of consciousness or spiritual evolution. Mr. Krishna is very careful to acknowledge the universal nature of this power, an energy that transcends so called religious beliefs. The book acts as a single account of the danger of awakening Kundalini before "her time" (pg. 165), but the author also documents his progress, and his eventual understanding of the changes (both physical and mental) that take place within him.
At a time when many are searching for a practice that would cultivate a kind of inner peace that can be made manifest in the external world, Mr. Krishna has written this book. His descriptions of how his awakening helped him to see the world differently, is a testament to the illuminating nature of the power of Kundalini. Reading this book allowed me to further substantiate a connection between the transformational powers of neuromelanin. This chemical resides at key points in the body, and works together with control of breathing and proper nutrition, to result in a beneficial enhancement of the mind, body and spirit.

For all those people who think they are doing kundalini yoga or are really doing kundalini yoga with all its exercises and breathing routines, this is an essential description of what can happen if you 'do it right' - the effects of the exercises. It is also a warning to those who dabble in this area without understanding what can happen - if you do not understand the process and its effects. Some of the effects experienced by Gopi are dangerous and traumatic, they could have killed him or sent him insane.
His book does not tell you how he did it, because it is clear that Gopi Krishna was unaware to the very last what he had done that others hadn't to get this effect. He practised deep meditation and breathing exercises, but then so do and did thousands of others who have never had these experiences. So don't expect any instruction on techniques, but as a description of effects and a sort of cautionary warning it is marvellous.
The only thing that mars the book is the pompous, trite and clearly totally uninformed comments throughout the book that have been added as a 'psychological commentary' by James Hillman - who clearly has been no closer to a spiritual experience than a bottle of whisky. Miss his comments out and you have a brilliant book. Why Shambala felt the need to add them in I do not know, it detracts from the contents and is a real annoyance.
All that Gopi Krishna wrote is absolutely spot on.
