The Kundalini Experience: Psychosis or Transcendence Paperback – January 1, 1987

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Many people have heard of the extraordinary phenomenon of kundalini awakening in which a persons body is swept by muscle spasms, indescribable sensations & sharp pains running throughout the body. He feels his body tearing within. Then suddenly he laughs & is overcome with bliss. When allowed to progress to completion, this process may culminate in deep psychological balance, inner strength, and emotional maturity.

Psychiatrist Lee Sanneli, cofounder of the Kundalini Clinic in San Francisco, differentiates this from a psychotic episode. Instead, it is a psychophysiological transformation, or 'rebirth' process as natural as physical birth.

CONTENTS: 1) Significance of Psychophysiological Transformation Today 2) The Kundalini Experience and Scientific Objectivity 3) Kundalini Experience - Classical Model 4) The Physio-Kundalini 5) Cross-Cultural Aspects of the Kundalini Experience 6) Case Histories 7) Self-Reports 8) Summary of Signs & Symptoms 9) Kundalini Cycle: Diagnosis and Therapy 10) Kundalini & Spiritual Life

I acutally bought a copy of this book 10 years ago, read it, and thought it was a load of baloney. (And was secretly freaked out by the thought that it might NOT be baloney). Then, since I didn't want to consider the possibility, I got rid of the book. Now, 10 years later, a year after my OWN chakras started 'waking up'(and freaking the heck out of me!) I was directed to this book again and am now drinking it up, absolutely relieved that it exists, because the process it's describing is EXACTLY what's happening to me. (So much for my baloney theory!)It's too bad the book is out of print now, but kudos to all of the other sellers who are still making it available. Talk about the right book at the right time. If you suspect your energy is raising itself to a higher level (or you're not sure what's going on) check out this book. It may help a lot! It defintely has helped me. (And, in truth, the fact that I read it years before I went through this experience actually helped me to recognize it when it started happening to me).

The content of this book is excellent. I wanted to reduce my review by a star because of the incredible amounts of typos in this Kindle version. But the content is to important, so five stars

ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS ON THE THEME OF THE KUNDALINI SYNDROME OF WHICH SOME PEOPLE LOVE THE WRONG SPIRITUAL PRACTICES. THE AUTHOR ANALYZES THE PHENOMENON BASED ON REAL CASES AND SHOWS SOLUTIONS TO THE THEME. UNFORTUNATELY, THE BOOK HAS NOT BEEN REEDITED AND IS AN INVESTIGATION WORK THAT IS WORTH IT.

This is a good book for anyone who has experienced or thinks they have experienced a Kundalini awakening, spontaneously or otherwise.
The author does a good job of presenting the data in a rational, semi-scientific manner. Anyone experiencing some of the bizzare
and esoteric side-effects of an awakening will find this book grounding and a good source of reference points along their journey.
Not the definitive story on Kundalini, but a useful tool nevertheless.

Dr Sannella has not had a kundilini experience, but compiled this book based on the experiences of other people who came to his psychiatry practise and from books by mystics etc. On the plus side it provides a wealth of experiences and some quite interesting medical facts.

On the negative side probably only about 10% of the case histories he cites are kundalini experiences, which makes this book very frustrating reading.

The definition of a kundalini experience is very clear. it is provoked by only a very few types of practise all of which involve the base of the spine. The energy soars up the spine and provokes a very profound experience. Few have genuinely had such an experience.

Sannella dismisses this definition - one which Buddhists, Taoists, Hindus and numerous other people all agree on and says that because his [few] observations don't match with this definition - the definition must be wrong.

The reality is that he has lumped just about every possible spiritual experience into the kundalini category - rebirth, out of body, ego death, shadow visions, ordinary visions, hallucination, even synaesthesia for goodness sake. He has also cited a number of meditators who were not properly trained in the techniques they were using, whose experiences went profoundly wrong - the energy they generated circled round and affected a number of their more precious organs - heart, liver, stomach and made them profoundly ill. Such is the danger of meditating in ignorance, but he doesn't even mention this, all Sannella does say is that all these gurus must have got it wrong because the experiences of these poor unfortunates don't match the definition.

Gandhi once said when asked what he thought about western civilisation that he thought it was a good idea. He might have added that in the process of civilisation a little humility was needed in the west as well. Our American cousins do have a tendency to write books about subjects of which they have little experience and no wisdom in order to make money. This book is one of them.
