About the Movie
For the third installment of the hugely successful Kung Fu Panda series, Po reunites with his biological father and travels with him to a secret sanctuary of pandas where, to his surprise, he does not fit in. There he meets Mei Mei, an overly eager panda, who had been promised to Po through an arranged marriage when they were children. To make matters worse, an evil ancient spirit called Kai begins terrorizing China and stealing the powers of defeated kung fu masters. Now, in the face of incredible odds, Po must learn to train a village of clumsy, fun-loving pandas to become a band of Kung Fu Pandas. The whole star-studded cast of voices return for this new epic adventure including Golden Globe®-nominee Jack Black, Oscar® winners Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, Lucy Liu and David Cross. They are joined by Oscar® winner J.K. Simmons, Oscar® nominee Kate Hudson and Golden Globe® winner Bryan Cranston. Kung Fu Panda 3 opens nationwide on January 29, 2016.

As I mentioned, you can definitely tell it's a Kung Fu Panda score with it's familiar themes, instrumentation, and fun moments found throughout. The one thing that I did notice, however, is that this score is a lot more emotional than the previous ones. I haven't seen this film yet, but I am guessing it has a lot of tearful moments in it? Cues like "Oogway's Legacy" (track 1), "Portrait of Mom" (track 12), "Po Belongs" (track 13), "Two Fathers" (track 15), and "Father and Son" (track 20) seemed to be specifically crafted for some pretty emotional moments within the film (the titles give it away too). At any rate, they are just a few of the some of the beautiful moments found throughout the music. The score seems to be loaded with hair raising goose bump moments as well. This is due to the power crescendos armed with a large orchestra, beautiful instrumentation specific to the story, and a phenomenal chorus. One of my favorite tracks is "The Legend of Kai" (7). It has some wonderful storytelling movements within this piece which makes it perfect underscoring for an exciting tale. "Mei Mei's Ribbon Dance" (9) is another personal favorite as well just because I love the arrangement and instrumentation.
Lorne Balfe, who recently did the score for "13 Hours" and who is a part of Zimmer's Remote Control Productions, contributes to the score by writing the cue "Father and Son" (track 20). It's a lovely sentimental piece that is sure to work well with the story to bring out a tear...or a big smile from the audience. Balfe is also credited as the score and soundtrack album producer. I assume this means that he arranged the score for a soundtrack release?
The score closes with two different versions of the "Kung Fu Fighting" song. The first one is performed by the Shanghai Roxi Musical Studio Choirs and Metro Voices, London. It's a wonderful collaboration between these two groups and indeed a celebratory way to end the story. The Vamps give us another interpretation of the classic song but I still tend to favor the Cee-Lo Green and Jack Black version from the first film. Another song entitled "Try" is performed by Patrick Brasca featuring Jay Chou. Another featured performer on the score is the great classical pianist Lang Lang. His talents can be heard on cues like "Oogway's Legacy", "Portrait of Mom", and "Po Belongs". Lang's skills are best featured and utilized in "Oogway's Legacy" however.
The CD version of the soundtrack is released through Sony Classical and contains 23 tracks running about 1 hour and 10 minutes. There is a 12 page insert that contains production credits, photos/images from the film, orchestra listing, choir listing, and a note from directors Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni. If your a fan of the previous scores, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It still has the same great themes, new variations, and some great emotional moments as well. I recommend.
This score adds another set of themes, giving us a soft, emotional theme for the appearance of Po's paternal father. The use of Chinese driven instrumentation in the pieces "Father and Son" and "Portrait of Mom" give this new theme a unique sound filled with joy, and a touch of soft sorrow: the musical equivalent of a "tears of joy."
Also added is a new theme for the villain, Kai. Zimmer creates a wonderfully rhythmic piece that gives Kai the sound of a marching, powerful force. The use of more Chinese instrumentation combined with a simple theme that is even built to full orchestra in several pieces gives a very complete theme.
The most wonderful aspect of "Kung Fu Panda's" scores (and many children's film scores) is how they use full orchestral themes. This score combines the themes from the past films and mixes them in with the new, giving a deep and powerful listen. Songs like "Oogway's Legacy" and "The Dragon Warrior" both use the themes of past soundtracks and add further depth to make truly gorgeous pieces. I highly recommend this soundtrack to lovers of film scores, especially if you love the other "Kung Fu Panda" soundtracks. This score drives home the themes and sounds from it's predecessors while still sounding fresh and original: a feat rarely achieved in a sequel soundtrack.
Favorite songs:
"Oogway's Legacy": A beautiful retelling of the original "Oogway Ascends" from the first soundtrack. It uses the piano throughout the piece as it drifts deep into the cello and strings for the classic Oogway theme. Not quite as good as the original, but a beautiful retelling.
"The Legend of Kai": This song gives the story of the villain in music. It touches on the Oogway theme, the theme for Kai, and beautiful bridges between them. An excellent example of the beauty and diversity in this soundtrack.
"Kai is Closer": This song takes a sampling of many types of music as it portrays a critical scene in the film. The movement through Kai and Oogway's themes riddled with Chinese instrumentation and short action cues between give the feeling of a complete journey in one song. The ups and downs and switches from action to mournful strings make for a wonderful piece.
"The Dragon Warrior": My favorite piece on the soundtrack. this song gives Po a full and powerful theme that takes the musical aspects of all three films and roles it into an identity. The use of the "Father and Son" theme and the classic Po theme all given more layers and blended into one song makes for a powerful statement of a song. This song is arguably my favorite in the trilogy.
