First impressions out of the box was this is made using high quality webbing and buckles. Th medal connectors (which take all the force when your dog pulls) are super stout. The quick release buckles are plastic, but they are good quality and only keep the chest strap in placez not taking any direct force. The included seat belt tether looks rock solid and could also be used as a super short training leash if your dog is tall enough.
Adjustment only took a few minutes and was easy enough.. Haven't had to adjust it again.. And the fit very stable. The last harness I had kept spinning from side to side (as my dog loves to pull off trail and into the woods looking for rabbits), but this one really stays in place., I think because the wider material under her neck, instead of just a thin strap.
I also like that you can adjust the overall length using two different positions that the chest strap snaps into (although this isn't mentioned on Amazon, or even in the instructions). This allows for a better fit, and keeps the strap from rubbing up against the back of your dog's legs.
Fast forward one week and she is now 25 lbs and it fits even better (note - I have not loosened any of the straps to make it bigger yet). Talking to other dog owners who have purchased this makes me realize we will need to purchase the large at some point. However, I don't see that happening anytime soon. For extra ease, I keep the carabiner hooked onto the center back seat belt so that all we have to do is put her in the car, clip it onto her harness and away we go!

So, I was then on the hunt for a crash tested one that would not cause the same issue. I discovered three others. After researching I settled on this one. I have only had it a few days but already done a long journey. Obviously (and thankfully) not tested in a crash but it sits well on him (7 kilo puppy) and doesn’t put pressure on his airway.
Hope this helps others in making their decision.
My only quibble would be the lack of a rotating clip between the carabiner and the harness attachment. I have to attach the carabiner to the rotating clip on her lead for free movement, otherwise when she changes position the harness tightens around her. It's a problem easily sorted and I wouldn't let it deter me from recommending this product to those who want to rely on something more substantial than plastic clips to keep their dogs safe... these are steel.
It’s easy to fit, seems very well made and my dog is very happy wearing it. It is quite heavy thanks to the metal hardware which may be an issue with very small dogs, but my labrador puppy doesn’t seem to mind, even when we used it as a walking harness, and of course it’s the metal clips which give the harness it’s strength. A word of warning though - if it’s even slightly loose fitting, the dog can escape it so make sure it’s tight enough! She seems to have plenty of space to settle on the back seat when restrained, but not enough that she can try to jump in my toddler’s lap or try to get in the front of the car. Thankfully I’ve not needed to test the crash test claims but so far I’m happy.
I bought the medium which fits my 13kg dog very well. I did have an issue with the seller sending the wrong size and the ensuing marketplace returns palaver... I hadn’t realised that the medium was not sent by Amazon unlike the other sizes. However, we have the correct size now so it’s all good. If it wasn’t for the fact that the metal on the harness will rust if wet, I would probably ditch our regular waking harness and use this full time, I like it that much!
We struggled, however, with using the seat belt through the carabiner, hence dropping two stars. Our dog moves around a lot when travelling and within seconds he was getting himself tied in knots and getting stressed out by it. This wasn't too bad if he was on the front seat of the van (3 seats) where one of us could untangle him, but it was being done literally every few minutes. We now attach him using a doggy seat belt to the clip on the back that the carabiner attached to. We know this isn't ideal in a crash situation, but he is far happier and can untangle himself when he moves around, and the damage to him in a crash will be less than if we clipped onto his collar.
Also has the advantage that we used to walk our golden retriever whilst wearing this harness rather than needing to change over when out of the car. He was happy to wear it and didn't try to get off.
Not cheap but you get what you pay for and the safety of our best friend is well worth the extra expenditure!
If the harness had sleeves for the hard nylon to reduce friction it would get 5 stars.
I have two lively German pointers who, although trained, do like to move around ie stand up/turn around/lie down again. The first time using only the karabiner>seatbelt, the karabiner slid down and limited the ability to stand up despite the fact the karabiner should slide in theory. One of my dogs also got slightly tangled up in the seatbelt through trying to turn around and adjust her position. I then tied the sling to the seatbelt in order to keep it above them and hopefully allow them to turn but the same thing happened again - tangled. What tends to happen is that they end up clamped, standing or sitting, against the back of the seat, and due to opposition reflex it’s difficult to relax the tension in the strap enough to release the karabiner, which in turn has caused a little fraying of the harness loop due to the metal biting when trying to release them (my fault).
Could my dogs be better trained to settle? Absolutely. But can i expect them to stay in one position for at least an hour? No.
There is nothing wrong with the design and quality of this product, but i dont believe it’s necessarily suitable for every dog. My stars are really just to hopefully draw people’s attention so if they know that they have a less chilled dog, it may be worth trying but be aware they may need to return it. Otherwise, as expected, really good quality product. And a really difficult product to get the balance right between comfort and safety.
They are quite fiddly to put on the dog even when I have been using one of them for 6 months, I do feel the dog is safer in the car using the Kurgo car seat. My dogs are both Shih-poo and I use the Small size for the biggest dog who is 10 months old and weighs 7 kilo's and the puppy who weighs 3 Kilo's is 3 months and fits into the Xsmall.
Also the harness rubbed the area behind her front legs (arm pits) so badly during a walk that they scabbed up so we don't use this anymore.
He hates wearing it.
The harness fits just fine and there is still room if he grows a little more.
It's easy to put on and he just loves being able to sit on the seat and be safe now when traveling. He was in a little crate before but he started to get travel sick in that. Since using the harness he can now see where he is going he hasn't been sick when traveling.
I would highly recommend this harness.
It's well made, strong and sturdy.
Can be used as a walking harness although we haven't yet used it for that as we use a Halti, which works fine.
