The ornament comes nicely packaged in a very giftable box. You could wrap it up and put it under the tree (who gives a Tardis away?) if needed. The glass itself is a lovely shade of blue, and we'll probably spend an hour trying to arrange a light on the tree to show off the blue glass to its finest.
The "hand painted" aspect of the ornament is kind of what you expect these days. Not so well done, walking that fine line between rustic and shoddy. But you have a Tardis in your house and soon on your tree and you just don't care.
I would like to give this lovely ornament a five-star review, but as far as we've been able to discern, this Tardis is not bigger on the inside. We're still looking. If we discover that the laws of space and time can indeed be broken, I will be back to update this review with another star. Perhaps a blue start would be appropriate.
Fish sticks and custard anyone?
It is glass, and it is delicate. I kind of wish I had ordered 2 and might suggest it if you're looking to buy. I didn't have a problem with shipping or anything and it's certainly in one piece, but I think my daughter is terrified to unpack it for fear of breaking it as she loves it so. I think if she had two she would loosen up a bit and not worry so much.
The rich color in the picture is true, if not washed out. Its even better for real. Its a lovely ornament.
I didn't realize that this thing was actually glass/ceramic (not sure which). This was a pleasant surprise. It's fairly large, but not overwhelmingly so. It really looks nice on the tree, if nothing else! If you like Doctor Who (I grew up with Tom Baker on PBS), pull the trigger, even when it's not on sale!
Cathryn's review is right on the money .. I WANTED to like it I really did... I am a HUGE Doctor Who fan, have watched every one of the newer (since the 9th doctor) episodes faithfully, was super pleased with the Kurt Adler glass Tardis ornament.. and pleased with the K-9 ornament by the same guy though, oddly enough, the K-9 ornament is made of the same molded plastic as the red dalek here...
Here's the thing.. I realize beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, others clearly love this ornament and I'm not knocking their opinion at all.. but given what K-9 looked like in the old Dr. Who episodes I guess that lowered my expectations a bit :P .. don't get me wrong K-9 is freaking awesome but special effects back when he was introduced weren't as spectacular as they are in modern day times (9th doctor onwards).. so to me the K-9 ornament LOOKS like K-9.
Then there's the daleks.. we've been treated to them in all their shiny, metallic, menacing fury from the 9th doctor onwards ... so when I get a dalek ornament I guess I expect it to look...well, menacing and intimidating like a Dalek ! :P But this.. it just looks like cheap plastic.. had it been made of a more shiny metal material (or heck even glass with shiny metal paint) I think it would have looked a lot better .. when I look at it I just don't think "dalek"...
The Tardis ornament btw is spectacular, the glittery blue and silver glass production really does it justice I love the way it looks on the tree ! (I'm referring to the Kurt Adler tardis and k-9 ornaments btw)
When I told me girlfriend I had replaced it and gotten more, she said I didn't have to do that but I was too late to return the order. Amazon issued me an apology and said I could refuse delivery or return the package, but when they arrived and I opened the package, I was so pleased with the quality of the Dalek and Cybermen that I actually kept them all.
I was expecting a kind of hokey piece, but these are honestly really cool. I'd argue they are not worth the purchase price at full cost because they are not being hand blown, and the paint job is questionable on the tardis. But I really have no issues with the Cybermen and Dalek. They are large, brightly colored/chrome/patina, and def worth hanging from the tree.
My issue with the Tardis is that it requires more precise and specific paint additions than the Dalek or the Cybermen ornament, and this detail shows. The hand painting was pretty poorly done with a very fast and shaky hand. Overall, it looks great on a tree, but on closer inspection it leaves a little to be desired. None the less, definitely not a hokey piece and the best tardis ornament I've seen on amazon compared to the plastic stuff.
