Japanese Kutsuwa STAD T'GAAL is a compact portable pencil sharper that can adjust sharpening angle and length in 5 different settings with a simple turn of a dial. For a sturdier tip, with less lead breakage, set the dial to a lower number such as 1 or 2. Shorter pencil tip is recommended for softer lead such as color pencils or for short pencils such as golf pencils and half pencils. To obtain a longer lead tip, set the dial to a higher number. Longer lead point lasts longer before having to sharpen again and is suitable for harder lead pencils. With any angle the dial is set to, this angle adjustable manual pencil sharpener produces a perfect sharp point every time. When not in use, set the dial to “close” so the shutter slides down and keeps the pencil shavings from falling out of the hole. Contoured body fits comfortably in your hand and conveniently holds pencil shavings before it needs dumping. These unique sharpeners are available in light blue and pink. Made in Japan.

I love coloring in adult coloring books and use many different brands of colored pencils. I have tried several different sharpeners but none of them work as well as this one. My immediate thought was while sharpening one for the first time was it felt like a hot knife going thru butter. I was able to turn the pencil without any hesitation or snagging. It sharpened it so well it looked as nice as a new pencil right out of the box.
It holds the shavings inside which is very convenient and less messy. I also like how it is adjustable. On the back of the box it shows you what number to set it at for what type of sharpness you like. It's awesome!!!
I gave this pencil sharpener 5 stars because I've searched high and low for something that will gives consistent results and doesn't leave me disappointed. So far I'm thrilled with the performance, and I really hope it holds up over time because I'm going to be putting it through some pretty tough conditions. Well done Kutsuwa!
Update: I bought another three for my other art bags. I have colored pencils ranging from Crayola Twistables, Sargent, Artilicious, Koh I Noor, Marco Raffine and Derwent and this sharpener works as advertised on each of these pencils. The cost of the sharpener is irrelevant when you see how much lead is saved as it shaves only a miniscule amount with each twist.
That said, it is not my favorite for a few reasons:
1. This is a manual pencil sharpener, people! If you are a classroom teacher and envision yourself sharpening 20+ pencils a day, think again! You will get blisters on your hands and be even more upset when students break their pencils! I don't think the blade is very sharp or sturdy, as I would expect a sturdy sharp blade to sharpen the pencils easier and quicker.
2. The blade gets dull over time. Yes, a classroom is a harsh environment for this little thing, but I've been through 2 in 6 months. Once the blade dulls, see #1.
3. RoseArt and Crazy art colored pencils have really hard wood that is almost impossible to sharpen in this!
I do like this for Crayola colored pencils. It is the perfect sharpener for that particular wood. That opens up another pain, though, because now I need to separate colored pencils into two different categories for sharpening!
