For half the price, these locks are great. I purchased 3 of them for each of my bedroom doors. Installation was very simple and the locks have a very heavy, sturdy build to them. Compatible with left or right-handed doors.
Pairing with my Vera3 z-wave controller was simple and uneventful. Z-wave control provides automated lock/unlock function, as well as the ability to set PIN codes remotely. All very standard interface.
One tip that almost messed up my installation. The power cord from the keypad unit MUST be tucked into the slot so that it comes out of the TOP of the lever assembly. The cord then feeds through the TOP of the assembly inside the door. Otherwise, the cord will rub on the internals and eventually fail. 2 of my units had the cord properly tucked in but the third came untucked, probably during packaging. This is a 2 second fix that will save you problems in the future. I never would have noticed this if I didn't install 3 of these locks at the same time.
The locks contain DIP switches that allow for automatic relocking if desired, along with a flashing 5-second LED that indicates whether the lock is open or closed. This can be turned on or off as desired. You can also set the buttons to beep when pushed, or just flash red.
The locks are very attractive and I have had no problems with their manual or automated operation. I can't comment yet on battery life but I would anticipate easily getting 1-2 years out of the 4 AA batteries with regular use. Battery replacement is very simple.
First the center spindle is small, thin and flimsy and the handle rattles and also is very flimsy. Second and my biggest issue is YOU CAN NOT INSTALL with a current DEADBOLT in a NORMAL configuration, IT DOESN” T FIT. The top box portion of the lock which holds the battery is too large to fit in the 5 ½ inch STANDARD spacing between locks. That is absolutely BONEHEAD design by Kwikset. This lock is only really designed for a single lever lock door but I don’t believe it is strong enough to make it the only lock. If I were still in the locksmith business I would not sell it. There is a solution as messed up as it is.
So like everyone these days I went to Kwikset’s support page to see if I had screwed up or if the door is nonstandard. I didn’t and it wasn’t. You will find some answers that says yes it will work if the separation between locks is 5 ½ inches which is the standard spacing on pre-drilled doors, which most are these days. So that was wrong on their page. I finally found were someone wrote, very curtly, switch the locks. Put the deadbolt on the bottom and the lever on top. Okay that works but that is non-standard and looks stupid. (see attached photo.)
Here is why this is really stupid. First the cover, which is the real problem for installation. Has about a quarter inch of dead space at the top, just redesign it and make it smaller and have it slide on from the front on the top. It would appear that the bonehead who designed this has never installed residential handsets and deadbolts. There is a groove on each side the cover slides down along during installation. How about you take the grooves off and slide it on from the front. Oh, bet they hadn’t thought of that.
The other option is to maybe get with times and use a small higher capacity lithium battery. Nobody is going to care about a $1 price increase with the lock over $100 dollars that increase is less than 1%. Second you could put the battery pack on the bottom. Finally, and this one is almost criminal WARN CONSUMERS. Put in the literature and on the box that it won’t fit if your using a deadbolt and most people should be using a deadbolt cuz the lock just isn’t the good.
After spending thousands of dollars on Kwikset locks in my lifetime that will most likely come to an end. I will find a better lock that is upfront and consumer friendly.
Also note the issue pointed out on another review that the hex nut can be remove from the outside and lock removed.
