*Updates on Homekit Functionality at the End of the Review*Original Review:I will flesh out my review as time goes by.Purpose of PurchaseTo make life easier for my wife. Also, I am traveling soon for business, so I wanted to make sure she had absolute ease of access if needed.InstallationI opened the box a while ago but when it came time for installation, someone threw away the Quickstart Card already and I couldn't find any instructions laying around. Luckily, you can figure out the installation by looking at the picture. I had to repeat a step or two to make sure I used all the screws. Later, after I installed the app, only then did I see the instructions are PDF only and through the APP!*IMPORTANT* - the "Handing Process"I initially thought this product was a hunk of junk because the bolt didn't even work smoothly when operating the bolt manually. And when I used the APP it wouldn't close and would get jammed. Because as stated above I didn't have instructions at the time of installation, I didn't know about the "Handing Process". Luckily, you can reset the "Handing Process" where the lock figures out its orientation. Following the online FAQ to reset the "Handing Process" didn't work for me. I called Tech Support and they gave me a different set of directions (odd) which worked.Note to Owners with Double-DoorsSo if you have a Double-Door Design with the Handle Grip, just be cognizant of replacing everything with matching hardware. And there will be a hole you need to cover on the bottom. I'm no hardware expert, but I went to Home Depot and used a Cabinet Door Knob to cover the hole and I had some existing Door Handle sets lying around for the rest. Maybe there is a more elegant solution but just something to keep in mind if you have Double Doors. Again, as I didn't have a lot of time, I ended up having to purchase a Defiant Bolt set (because it was the cheapest at Home Depot) just to cover the top hole. They didn't have any Door Hole Covers in Bronze at the Home Depot or Dummy Bolt Sets. I'm sure there is availability online, but will look into it when I am back in town.HomekitI have an Apple TV 4th Gen and an iPad 3 that I can use as a dedicated Homekit Hub. The iPad 3 unfortunately does not support iOS10 so that was out of the equation. I enabled the necessary settings on the Apple TV to make it a "hub". Now I can remotely lock and unlock the Kwikset as long as I have internet access. It is a bit unreliable though--understandably so as my Apple TV is located quite some distance from the Front Door.Access for Other Family MembersSo from the Kwikset Premis APP, you can invite other users to access the Lock through Homekit. I invited my wife. She accepted and the device appeared on her phone but she couldn't unlock the door. Since I am leaving soon, I will just assume this is user error until I can dedicate some time to troubleshoot. I really wish you can just pair multiple users (with their own Apple ID and Keychain set) to the Kwikset Premis. Unfortunately, as it is now, once I have paired the device with my AppleID, I have to share the Homekit with others, and as above stated, I can't get it to work currently. So for now, I just created a User and Code for my wife to punch-in on the Keypad.Interim VerdictThere are a lot of "Smart-Home" devices out there. For me, they are supposed to be seamless/fully integrated and actually make my life more convenient to be a 5-star rating. For example, almost every room in my house has a Lutron Dimmer controlled by the Lutron Smart Bridge. That is a seamlessly integrated Smart-Home Smart device: I can turn lights on and off very easily in less than 5 seconds from my phone without any fiddling or waiting. Another example is my Nest. Again, seamlessly integrated and can adjust very easily anywhere. On the other hand, I have an Anova Bluetooth Sous-Vide device. The Bluetooth Feature for me is completely useless, let alone spending more money to get the Wi-Fi version. The APP is just a glorified timer with a GUI. It is much faster and more convenient for me to set the temperature and use my phone's Clock App as a timer manually. The same can be said for this Kwikset Premis. Rather than fiddling with the APP, which takes a long time to load and sync, for now, I just set different codes for different users and they just punch it in to open the Front Door. To that effect, at least, it works very well. I can also set unique codes for the maid and delete them later. If I come back and can't get the Homekit working on my wife's phone, I will just use the APP for Device Maintenance and User Management and rely solely on the Keypad.Update 2/7/2017I am still overseas traveling. Every time my wife unlocks or locks the door, I get a notification on my phone. I can consistently unlock and lock my Premis remotely overseas. My Apple TV 4th Gen is upstairs and at a minimum 30 feet above and away from the Front Door. So the Kwikset Premis App is working consistently for me *now*. I have no logical explanation for why everything works perfectly now. My wife is technically clueless and I am obviously several thousand miles away. "Some settling occurred."The time it takes for the Kwikset Premis App to load, sync, and update status is, on average, 7 seconds. The time it takes for the Nest App to load, sync, and update current temperature settings, is also 7 seconds, although after the initial load, each consequent load within a reasonable time thereafter, is around 2 seconds. So it's comparable now. If the Kwikset Premis turns out to be a consistent performer in a 12 month period, I will upgrade my rating.Update 2/12/2017I am back home now. I got Homekit fully functional for me and my wife. No need to use the Kwikset Premis app anymore. Unlocking and locking from Favorites is instantaneous and no need to wait the 7 seconds for the app to load and sync.Update 2/20/2017First Firmware Update. Battery is already at 90% in a short four week period. Shorter than expected but not terrible I guess. Hopefully this firmware update really does address the battery life.

1 Year update: Since my original purchase I’ve added 2 more locks and will add 1 more shortly (rental units). There are 2 features I think are must haves: 1) 3 modes of entry (key, keypad, and HomeKit to provide failsafes, 2) ability to re-key lock as old tenants leave and new ones come in. I do use these on the back doors as daily constant use will quickly drain the battery. My only concern is that Kwiset’s reluctance to update the app will render the product useless for HomeKit use.

1 month update: Hit the 1 month mark on 8/24. On the 2.5 week mark the Premis app battery indicator was at 70%. Also noticed that the Home app and Premis app were very slow in updating the status of the lock. Right before the release of iOS 12 public beta 6 i was having an issue where the lock was not being recognized and i had got do a factory reset on 2 different occasions. After downloading public beta 6 the Home app/Premis app/Premis lock have been working exactly as it’s supposed to. The status updates on the Home/Premis apps take less than 3 seconds and excessive battery drain does not seem to be issue. I was averaging more than 10% drain per week for the first 2.5 weeks, and in the 2.5 weeks since i upgraded to public beta 6 update the battery indicator has not moved past 70%. Overall very satisfied and I ended up purchasing a second Premis lock (for the main entrance). This will be a good test for durability as the main entrance is used by the individuals on my unit and 2 additional units of tenants. Rating changed to 5 stars.

Haven't written a review in a while but figured I'd write one for this product as my experience with the Premis seems to be a little different than what I've read from other reviewers. I purchased the product via the Amazon Warehouse to save a few bucks. The lock came in its original packaging and everything was included. Even the screws were in their own individual, unbroken packaging. Not sure how that's possible for something that's used but THANK YOU Amazon Warehouse for making it happen.

Installation of the lock was fairly straightforward and I didn't need to do any drilling. Pairing the lock with the Kwikset app was the part that took by far the longest. Kwikset is not a fault. I didn't realize that since someone else had previously paired this lock with an app I needed to do a factory reset. Once I did the reset the Kwikset app recognized the lock immediately. Pairing with Apple's Home app was a breeze.

I view the Kwikset Premis as a first generation product and as such I've come to expect that they will be a little glitchy. And a further wrench is thrown into the equation when it's a third party product designed to integrate into Apple's ecosystem. With that being said the Kwikset Premis does everything I expected it to. At is most basic level I find it to be a sturdy deadbolt and I was able to easily rekey the lock so I can use the Premis with an existing KW1 key. Per the instructions touching the screen for a second or so will activate it and from there I can type in my code to open it, or hit the lock button to close it. HomeKit/Siri integration is where it gets fun. Via the Home app, or Siri, I can check the status of the lock and open or close it. It's kinda cool to be able say "Hey Siri, is the front door closed?" or "Hey Siri, can you open the front door?" I've even asked Siri to lock the door about 1/2 mile down the road from home as I forgot to do it as I left.

I commend Kwikset's engineers and designers for the work they put in creating a product that moves the deadbolt into the 21st century but also keeps it within the easy use and installation of a traditional deadbolt. However, I docked the Premis a star for 2 reasons: 1) the back housing needs to be removed in order to replace the batteries. 3 screws hold the housing in place, one of which is underneath the housing. Seems like the engineers forgot that the door handle would be there making the removal of this screw a major pain. 2) there is no mention of the installation manual or the Kwikset app on the instructions that come with the box. You an easily find the manual online and it's also located within the Kwikset app but a simple "Download the Kwikset app from the Apple Store for installation instructions and to get started" would have been an easy time saver.

I am keeping an eye out for the battery drain issue I've read about time and time again. I've had the lock in place for 4 days now and it's at 90%. Not sure if that's good or bad. Kwikset claims up to 6 months before battery replacement is needed and I've read some people saying weeks. I'm shooting for the 3 month mark. I'll keep you guys posted.

Overall, not a perfect product (as no 1st gen product ever is) but I'm happy. So far, so good!

P.s. I've attached some pics. Pardon the color on the door. Removing the paint and staining it dark brown is on my list of summertime projects :-)

I wanted to write this review because a published review dinged the Premis and it is a good product that didn't deserve the ding. My experience is that the install was easy, battery life is good, HomeKit integration works well, and the security of the lock itself is solid. If you already have Kwikset locks with SmartKey and you are interested in and can afford a HomeKit automated lock, it is a no-brainer to buy the Premis. If you already have Schlage locks it is probably a no-brainer to buy the Schlage HomeKit lock. If you need to change all your locks, you have a decision. Since I haven't tested any other locks I can't help you much with that decision. One thing I will say towards that decision, the Kwikset SmartKey works very well for easy rekeying and it is also reviewed highly for security. I give the Premis points for SmartKey. It took much less than 2 minutes to re-key the Premis to match the rest of the locks in the house. That convenience allows you to re-key immediately if a key is lost or someone who once had a key seems a little more risky in hindsight. Buying a few matching keys and less than 15 minutes to rekey the whole house is much better than alternative scenarios for rekeying.

The published review dinged the Premis badly for it's install documentation, battery changing difficulty, battery life, and the need to enter 2 numbers before the combination. So, I'll address those so no one is confused. Install documentation requires some scrolling on a phone if you don't let the app walk you through. Let the app walk you through. If you get out of the walkthrough, print the .pdf. It is a trivial issue not something to ding a product for on a review. Overall my installation experience was very easy. I was replacing a recent Kwikset lock, so I didn't even remove the latch, I just replaced the lock around the latch. Very quick. It is not hard to screw in the cover around the battery. Again, not something to ding the product for in a review, at most a need to buy a short handled screw driver (I already had one). It is not overall difficult to install the cover or to change the batteries.

Battery life has been excellent for me. I use rechargeable Eneloop AA batteries which sometimes last less on a charge than alkaline batteries. I have not had to change the batteries yet after 2 full months. The app reports battery life at 60% now. Battery life is a Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV) issue. Some reviewers report much worse life for this lock, other reviewers report much worse life for Schlage. I haven’t found a comprehensive, systematic test of battery life, so I wouldn’t weight anyone’s opinion too highly. I don’t use my front door that often, so my battery life is light for use opening and closing the lock. Communicating with a variety of phones and an iPad about 15 feet away is probably my main user of battery life.

The Premis has a feature requiring entry of two random numbers before the actual combination. The value of this features is that it prevents uneven wear with long term use of the same combination and it prevents soiled hands from leaving an impression of just the numbers used in the combination. This feature also makes it harder for someone watching you punch in the combination to get the pattern. Unevenly worn or soiled keys plus an observed pattern could make entry relatively easy for a skilled observer. The published reviewer ignored the issues of wear, soil, and pattern observation and dinged the lock for requiring the extra numbers. He thought that a finish that hides fingerprints better is a complete solution to the problem. Other locks don’t address the issues the two random number entry is intended to address. The inconvenience is minor, especially for a HomeKit lock you will be opening with Siri or an app most of the time.

The published reviewer gave no points for SmartKey which is a major feature of Premis and Kwikset.

My opinion is the Premis is a solid choice for a HomeKit smart lock and a pretty obvious choice if you already have Kwikset SmartKey locks. The issues the published reviewer cited are trivial or YMMV and should not have much impact on decisions to buy the Premis.

5.0 out of 5 stars My second because I loved the first
Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2024
This is (premis) the only lock I encountered to be supporting all three features I wanted,(the homekit, keyed entry, and rekey option)
I had this lock before too. Therefore I knew what I wanted when I was buying another. Installation is easy if you are even a litle DIY person.
The only hassle iswhen tucking in the connectors inside the lock housing. The locking shaft passing through the door is so close to it that if not properly tucked in, it will touch that mechanism and jamm it.
If you think you have installed it properly and it is still jamming do not think that it is low batteries, check the cable/connector instead and tuck it in nicely without it touching the shaft.
Everything else is no brainer.
I wish it was a little less costly.

1.0 out of 5 stars App not working in India
Reviewed in India on October 17, 2023
I wanted a smart lock, compatible with HomeKit.

However, the premis App is not available in India. Why even sell a product if you are not going to support users of this country. Very disappointed, having spent quite a lot of money on it. Nowhere it is written that the product is not supported in this country.

My initial review below is valid and the lock was working great for a month or so. The problem now however is that since iOS13 came out, the App doesn’t work!!!!!

Interacted with service, no help... say reset lock, reinstall app, etc... all works fine for a while then the app “forgets” the lock and have to go through whole setup again.

Lock works fine through Apple Home app, but only via the Kwikset app can you set user codes and options. Since it’s on a rental property and I depend on being able to set user codes remotely, the lock is now unusable for me until they fix the App to make it iOS 13 compatible. Even after updating to iOS 13.1.1 it doesn’t help... Apple might have changed something in HomeKit but Kwikset’s app is now no longer compatible!!!

Obviously reducing to minimum stars until they update and fix the app so I can use the lock as intended.

Seems a little silly of the large price delta between this and the non-HomeKit version, particularly because the only difference is a tiny little module on the lock. Anyway, works fine and I like the features. Hope it does not chew through batteries as other people have complained about... I'll definitely report here if it does. I have a good comparison since I just replaced the exact same (but not homeKit version) lock with this one. The non-HK version I could get about 6-10 months from 1 set of batteries. We'll see how this one goes.

One issue I did have is that there's no way to manually set the time/date in the lock. This is a problem if you enable a user access code to only work during certain days or certain times. After calling support, they confirmed it's not possible to manually set the time/date but the lock should do it by itself once it connects to the wifi and internet. In fact it eventually did, but took a few hours to do so for some reason. Not for the connection to be made, that worked right away... but for it to update it's own internal clock. This should be a feature within the app... to set it manually.

Docking 2 stars because of those 2 issues (overly expensive for no real reason, and quirky app with inability to set date/time manually). Also, the app has not been updated in YEARS! It works fine, but is a little buggy.
