Although I didn’t grow up nearly as poor as the people in this story, I could totally identify with the people of this town. So many people struggling to make ends meet, keeping so much to themselves, and having that small sense of pride that keeps them from asking for help. This is a type of people I never envisioned being featured in a romance novel, but somehow I’m glad they did.
Kyland and Tenleigh are both competing for the same scholarship; a scholarship that will allow them to leave this poor town and never have to return. These two find their way to one another through a series of out of place events that cause them to invest their hearts in one another “And I fell in love. Deep, hard, utter, and complete love. And he was still leaving. And he still wouldn’t look back.” Both had the desire to move on, to move out of this place, but both couldn’t keep their hearts locked away.
This is a story of sacrifice, choice, pride, and ultimately love. I was absolutely enthralled by this story. I was aggravated, yes, but this was a story that seemed totally real. The struggles they faced, the choices necessary to keep going, and ultimately the sacrifices made to ensure a future were perfect, for me. A top read, for sure.
I thought the first part of the story went somewhat slowly. Not that I didn't enjoy it, I was waiting for something more to happen, a little more angst, and I got that about halfway in. It was really good. There was pain with the love, some bitter with the sweet, and the story just felt deeper to me. I really liked both h/H, both so young, seventeen at the beginning of the book, and both so earnest, both wanting more out of life. But really, Kyland was the best part of the story. A sweet heroine, an interesting setting and side characters, a lot of good to it all, but I think the hero is why to read the book.
He had me crying by the end of it, because he didn't just say he loved someone, he showed it, in ways that truly mattered. So many times someone might say the words but not back it up with deed. Not this hero. And I so needed that kind of hero today: a fine, selfless hero with a true and giving heart. For all the sadness in the story and the surroundings, there was a real message of love and hope. The ending is great, the epilogue just incredibly sweet and complete with happy tears.
First -this was beautifully written
Second - the story was so touching and heartfelt sigh
Mia Sheridan has the goods.. this is only my second read by her and I look forward to reading many more of her books .
Tenleigh and Kyland ( great names by the way) both grew up in hills of Kentucky ( true hillbillies) they were both dirt poor, but they were both smart and intelligent people who just had it hard, him losing his father and brother and her having to take care of her mentally ill mother .During high school they both connected deeply to each other , sharing their hopes and dreams for a better future. They both wanted the other
one to achieve their goal, but there could only be one getting the opportunity..how do you choose, and this is where the author weaves a wonderful web of love, sacrifice, fear, hope, a little deception and it's all good . To say who stays and who goes is pointless because you end up rooting for both of them to succeed . No spoiler here It's much better to read about it because that makes it a beautiful love story sigh
Secondary characters are good too ,,their neighbor Burton , he gives the gifts that keep on giving , her sister , and Sam .. I love that she included all characters in the epilogue so you knew how it ended for everyone...sigh
