The "Everything Mill" model is excellent; their smaller model is not quite as good in my opinion. The grinder's ceramic blade is perfect, doesn't wear out, grinds up all size herbs and spices evenly and smoothly. Other grinder brands with stainless steel blades do not do as well and become loose and dull over time.
I liked the "Everything Mill" grinder so well, I bought two more. I have used this model on salt, peppercorn, corriander seed, anise seed, fennel seed, and cloves. It will adjust to grind course or down to near powder. However, I can't comment on this grinder's performance with other spices I have not yet tried to grind.
Overall, performance is excellent, blades are literally razor sharp just like their ceramic knives, and this size is versatile and easy to use. The snap-on top-sealer caps remain tight even after constant heavy-duty use -- I spice everything at every meal!!
If I had to suggest one improvement with this grinder, I would make the glass reservoir 2-inches taller to hold more seed so refill was less often. Other than that, great product in my opinion. I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned in these reviews with my four grinders. Sidebar: glass is a much safer and healthier container when holding herbs & spices (food). Plastic is not good for food, especially when around heat.
Humidity can get quite high sometimes where I live, so having the lid and (apparently) no metal parts for the salt one is a plus.
Grind coarseness can be adjusted (linearly, no preset "steps") by turning the knob on the top. TIP: The "F" and "C" directions can be confusing, just look at the milling parts and see if you are getting them closer together (finer) or farther apart (coarser).
BEWARE: I adjusted it too far in the "fine" direction, and when I tried to grind (black pepper) I could hear and feel as if I was actually grinding "sand". Upon inspection, I noticed the ceramic milling surfaces were "grinding themselves" - There is no limiting for how far you tighten the knob. Because I noticed that at once and readjusted for a coarser setting, the milling parts were just slightly damaged, not impairing functionality. I haven't tried, but it may be possible to really wear the ceramic off by tightening the coarseness knob too far in the "fine" direction, damaging the mill and eating some ceramic in the process (and I suppose hard biting on a chip or grain of that hard ceramic may chip teeth enamel).
So when adjusting it for very fine grinding, I suggest you gently try to turn the grinder without any spice in it (separate the grinding part from the container) to see if it turns freely. If it locks and you force it, you'll be grinding ceramic, so back off the coarseness knob a bit. You can also visually check if the ceramic milling parts are not touching each other looking from the internal (bottom) end of the grinding mechanism.
I was confusing this with a coffee grinder I bought at the same time and was thinking it cost $60, & even at that I was likely going to buy another. I was very happy when I came on here and saw it's really just $20!! I honestly believed it was a $60 device so that tells you how much we like it.
We like pepper on everything and we like it FINE, like almost the texture of flour, and unlike other mills we had in the past, the Kyocera has the ability to grind very finely. I have mild tendonitis and the action of using this mill does not make my hands sore or tired at all even when I grind quite a lot like for a big batch of soup.
I tried using it for flax but the stickiness of the oils made it too hard for me to turn with my bad hands. Cleaning it to switch products was also a pain- it has to sit out for a couple days to totally dry if you wash it! If you have strong, healthy hands and like to put flax on your breakfast daily, I would recommend getting one for flax and one for pepper. I also tried it on sea salt and that works fine but since salt doesn't go bad I think it's unnecessary to have it in a mill. Haven't tried any other stuff in it.
Basically, it's awesome for dry stuff like pepper and tolerable for sticky stuff like flax. Much more attractive to my eye than the typical big oak post style ones too (I find them really ugly!). When this one dies I will definitely buy again.
