I've loved multi-pens well over 20 years ago - I find that it's much more effective to take notes using more than one color pen since you can emphasize or separate thoughts.

I've shopped around and looked absolutely everywhere for different multi-pens and own about a dozen. Including THREE Lamy 2000 Multi-pens.

It's absolutely the BEST LOOKING multi-pen. The others tend to look far too technical or sterile. The brushed fiberglass and stainless barrel of the Lamy 2000 has a distinct, timeless look to it while the solid stainless clip has a really assertive look it whether clipped to papers or your shirt pocket.

The only other one I think looks great is the Lamy Accent.

One of the other reviews referenced the weight as being light and feeling plasticky - well, I prefer the light weight over the heavy feel of my Rotring in my shirt pocket. As far as the sound of the mechanism, I don't think it's significantly different from the sound of the other multi-pens I have with the same mechanism. You rotate the barrel to select the color rather than having multiple sliders on the exterior of the barrel. This means you keep the super clean look.

There is one flaw.

This is not the most robust pen out there. The barrel, although fiberglass, isn't as strong as the metal barreled multi-pens. I've cracked two. Also the top part with the pocket clip can come loose. This has happened once.

Lamy, however, has absolutely outstanding repair service and have never charged me for repair (If I recall correctly they charged me something like $6 for return shipping)

Since I have the others, it wasn't a huge deal.

Why do I have three? I thought I lost #1 and bought #2. Then I was in Germany in 2000 when the $ was strong so what the heck - I bought #3 for something like $40. Some time later I find pen #1 in the pocket of a suit I seldom wear! Bonus!!!!

Very nice pen indeed. I disagree with the previuos comment that is a cheap product. It is in fact a masterpiece of timeless design and elegant understatement. If you really would like to make a modern statement of understatement, than the Lamy 2000 line offers a very suitable way. It does in fact, have a rasperry sound when operated, but it's because of its superb mechanism that handles four pens with a single control (unlike the other cheap multipens which handle each pen with a separate control). I have upgraded mine with a yellow Lamy stylus pen for PDA's and an orange underliner from Rotring. In the case of the refills, I personally prefer Rotring to the original ones but I think is a matter of taste. In the case of the previuos review where the pens have to be priorly initialised, that's not the Lamy's fault, but that of the installed refill. I gave it four stars because it is in fact a delicate instrument that requires a small drop of oil once a year to operate smoothly and as with the other Lamy 2000 ballpen -now upgraded-, with use, the top piece where the button resides gets deformed with time up until the pen stops operating altogether, a new pen being in order. The other downside being, that the pens don't carry enough ink, but yet again, you are in fact carrying four pens so there should be no problem if one of them fails. Being a heavy user, all around I feel very pleased with the Lamy 2000 line and have been buying substitutes of the multi-pen and the filler pen every five years, but then again, after so much time they get pretty well used up too, so a new pen is always a pleasure have.

What a lifesaver. I have used the Lamy 2000, four color ball point pen for over 30 years. I had used the plastic Pilot four color pens when in school but when I was wearing a suit, the orange really didn't work. Bought my first Lamy in Washington, D.C. where I could take notes in one color, action items in another color, and delegated tasks in a third color. It has worked for me for many years. I still have the first one and the repair policy is excellent. The only repairs have been caused when I tried using non-Lamy refills. Now I have a PDA, I replaced the green with a stylus and the pen continues to be my very best friend.

This is a good solid pen that reduces bulk and the number of items I have to keep track of. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is the ink, sometimes it is slow to flow and I have to find a piece of scratch paper to scribble on to start it going again.

It fits my hand well, functions well mechanically, looks business like and gives a good appearance at meetings and while working, unlike some of the cheap plastic ones.

I do a lot of legal briefs that are color coded. This allows me to work while travelling or at a desk without having to keep track of several different color pens.

This is a Feb 2015 update, and I am now giving the pen 5 stars. I fixed the ink problem by switching to Fischer Bullet Pen refills. Sadly they only come in Black, Blue, and Red, but for my work the Green that comes from the mfgr. is good enough. At least for me this is now the perfect writing instrument. Having lasted this long it is obviously stout, especially given the amount of use it gets!
