Monumental disappointment and danger

Out of the box the unit was dirty, dusty, and the paint was already scraping off and blemished. The black anodize will get scraped off in no time (see photos). Tolerances are loose - when closed, the handles come apart by several mm loosely. Nothing like previous models, whose builds were tough and kept closed no matter what.

HUGE danger potential I found - when closing the pliers, the SAW blade actually deploys partially, directly into your hand.

Really wanted to enjoy this knife, the colors and the tools made it look like a worthwhile upgrade from the Skeletool, but after this monumental disappointment, I'm definitely sending this back and going back to my trusty skeletool.

Out of the box there are minor scratches everywhere. But the big issue is that the paint immediately scratches off just from opening and closing the tools. Disappointed from a brand I like so much.

This is the second Signal I have bought. The original Signal I own is a green and black colorway and many times I've used it outdoors I've lost it due to blending into it's surroundings. When Leatherman came out with the new Signal color options the Teal/Red caught my eye and thought how well the color scheme would stand out. My only problem when I received the Signal the teal was dull and coated in black smudges. I had to thoroughly clean and remove the pocket clip, blade, and saw blade to get it to my liking and or how it should have arrived. Overall the tool works as excepted, I just wish the finish would've been a little more to Leatherman's standards

Very Impressive, same Leatherman Quality I Would Expect

I already own a top of the line Leatherman Charge TTI so I can speak to the quality of the Signal. This knife is definitely in the same class. I did have to wipe it down to get rid of the black chalky dust on it, but I clean my tools now and again anyway, so no big deal. The paint seems durable, though it will wear away where there are joints like where the handles meet the pliers pivots. Again, no big deal, it's just on the inside. This is a tool, not a fashion accessory. Any man who walks around with pristine multitool probably doesn't even know how to change a light bulb. I love the robbin's egg/pink look, it's more like Cyan/Light Red. If I dropped it in the woods I would definitely be able to find it. I'm not sure why people are complaining about this, I love the Signal just as much as my Charge TTI. I have to say I was very impressed with the sharpness of the blade, so much so it made me bring my other multitools to the local sharpening service because I forgot how a good knife is supposed to cut. The inserts for the flint rod and the sharpener are nice and snug. The mamby pamby rape whistle is cheesy but it's built into the design of the flint mount, so it can just be ignored. Overall, this Signal is why I am happy to spend over $100 on a quality multitool rather than one of those crappy $20 bargains at the big box store.

I'm kind of an EDC-addicted maniac. I buy things meticulously and with purpose. Not only for the tools they contain, but how they work with completely different tools that the manufacturers would NEVER have considered. This might make a person rather biased cuz the last thing a mathematically stressed engineer needs to hear is "it doesn't work with this thing that has nothing to do with it". But that being said, I really like it for what it is, and I also like it for what it wasn't designed to do!

TOOLS
I bought this as a supplement to my full-metal Victorinox Swisstool. No multitool had ALL of the things I wanted on it, but the Topo Signal has just about everything that the Swisstool doesn't that you would want, and vice versa.
- It has a serrated blade where the Swisstool has a plain blade; both are important.
- It has needlenose pliers where the Swisstool has regular pliers; both are important.
- The Signal clips to your pocket where the Swisstool just goes into a pocket, making the Signal more of a quick draw.
- Also the knife is a one-handed open, which adds to the knife-draw speed, making the Signal a good front-man for the duo.
- The Leatherman site says that EVERY tool is one-handed open but, erm, not really. The knife is though. It's a little hole you push against rather than a nub. Space-saving anyway. And judging by the blade this is definitely a thick one.
- The saw is one-handed if you aren't going for speed but it's not as easy to deploy as the knife is.
- Signal's body is aluminum making it really light.
- I think the bit driver, bottle opener, and hex holes are a bit of an afterthought, but why the heck not.
- Hammer is just a flat edge that uses your own momentum as a way to punch nails and such. I think the reason the commercial showed a guy hammering a tent stake in is if you accidentally hit the stake with your hand, it doesn't hurt as much as stabbing yourself with a tiny nail that you missed! I haven't done that yet but just keep in mind that the hammer is only as good as your own precision.
- Whistle/Ferrous tip is nicely built. Comes out easily once you know how to deploy it. Same with the sharpener. The way it's designed ensures these things stay in place but you can lose them if you're not careful.

The Signal is a little loose on the opening. Maybe it's supposed to be that way but I'd prefer a tighter fit. Maybe I can tighten it myself if I have the precision bit? It's tighter once you clamp it into Plier-mode, but you can open it with one hand like a butterfly-knife. Actually now that I just said that I think it is supposed to be loose.

If I could add a tool to this thing I'd add scissors. That's the tool on the Swisstool that I use the most. Swisstool's also got a pry-bar on it, and a plain knife. Plain versus Serrated is up to personal preference; I'm an adventurer so I just go with both. If you put a pry-bar on the Signal I think it might come apart. But I know the Signal is built for the outdoors and yes, I will definitely use more tools on this when camping than when working.

I was surprised to learn that my original (pictured on left) was missing parts. My replacement arrived quickly. though it had two different shades of blue. there is one thing I don't like...the hinges on both are very very loose. not what I expected after carrying the rebar nearly every day for 5 years.

The design of the ferro rod design just seem weird. the rod is on the outside. I feel this should be on the inside. this way its not damaged from everyday use.

I bought this for my kayak and fishing. A noise making device is required by law on the yak. such as a whistle. tried the whistle its not so easy to access and use. is this a big deal? no not really.

not yet in love with the tool. thought I would be especially in the blue. it has the main tools I use when outdoors.

The striker and rod should be packaged separately so the entire body isn’t black and smudged when it arrives. Had to clean the entire thing before it was clean enough to go in my pocket. Great tool otherwise with a slick color scheme.
