3.0 out of 5 stars OK so it’s a Leatherman, but for the money, I’m not sure you’re getting anything extra...
By MSC on September 5, 2019
TLDR: A little pricey and I’m not sure what you get is worth the extra cost. Seems to be some quality control issues.

Photo: see the rough finish and watch the pinching!

The Leatherman is an odd sort of beast it’s something that does a lot of different things but none of them particularly well. But I am unable to get over the fact that I just love multi-tools, ever since my first Swiss Army knife as a kid. So I’m a sucker for when anyone comes out.

So this is a Leatherman. It’s a more expensive Leatherman but it’s not necessarily fancier. And wallet has most of the same tools it’s actually harder for me to use than my other ones. The pliers are much stiffer ( so you remember that first time when you grabbed the meat of your palm with the handles when you squeezed the pliers for the first time and your wife was wondering how the high-pitched girl scream was coming from the basement when there’s no girls down there ) yea, so it’s even easier to do on this one. Ouch. So you got to be really careful when you’re grabbing those pliers or you’re going to pinch the hell out of your palm.

Anyway I digress. And my hand hurts.

I found that both this version of the charge in the other version seem a little bit less refined than the other Leathermans. The action is not nearly as smooth as like on the Surge or Wave. The finish seems a bit rougher too. It’s almost like the tool didn’t go through a final polishing and cleaning up phase. The surface is a little rough there’s some scratches and it’s just not as slick as the other Leathermans. Normally I’d be fine with that but you’re paying a really tremendous premium for this thing and I’m not even sure what’s made of titanium on this because it’s just as heavy if not more so as the other model, and titanium supposed to be a light alloy. Supposedly the handles are titanium but they seem more like titanium coated or just partially titanium. My point is I’m not feeling the weight loss. And I’m not sure that the handles being more durable is ever going to be an issue

So you get one s30v blade, but it really doesn’t make that much of a difference to me. S30v is much bigger deal if it’s your bushcraft knife, not the little blade on a multitool. It holds its edge longer but it’s also more brittle than 420HC. For some people that’s not a good trade off for a tool of this type.

If you’re looking at that so I would just suggest that you save a little money and buy the regular version or a different model. I don’t see anything this thing gives you that the $50 cheaper Leathermans don’t give you.

I’m well past the broken in period and this tool just still feels rough and clunky. My favorite Leatherman continues to be my surge. It’s much smoother than opening and closing the pliers and all the tools than the charge and it has those interchangeable blades that I like. The knives flick open with your thumb like butter and yet are solid with no play. The Charge continues to feel really stiff.

For me the $200 Leatherman Charge TTi plus is just a vanity purchase and it’s one that I kind of regret. I really did prefer my original Charge which was also stiff and roughly finished but it was used primarily as my camping multi tool, and so it fit the theme of roughing it. In an every day setting I’m much more likely to grab this specific tool I need anyway. When I need a knife I’ll grab my Mora, when I need pliers I’ll grab my Kleins. And when I need a screwdriver I’ll grab an actual screwdriver.

I may have just realized that I don’t really need a Leatherman’s at all. As I was writing this review I realize that I used my humble Swiss Army knives all the time, wore those things out, and I just never use the LMs Nearly as much. But the times I do, they really came in handy and I was glad that I had one around. Anyway that’s not what this reviews about.

So bottom line is you unless you have two bills burning a hole in your pocket you may want to consider another model and use that extra 50 bucks to buy a Leatherman MICRA :-)
