Since its launch in 1993 by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program has become the standard measure of sustainability for buildings worldwide. Successfully reaching one of four LEED certification levels—Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum—requires specific point totals, which differ among building types. Getting certified, in addition to altruistic benefits, allows building owners to take advantage of a growing number of state and local government incentives. The menu of potential points available for various practices ranges from installing bike racks on-site to documenting the source of the iron ore used in anyconstruction steel. As any architect or developer can attest, navigating this complex system of required prerequisites and credits can be maddening. It may be good to be green, but it's still far from easy.

Being a lanlord and owning a house in Connecticut that is over 100 years old having tenants always trying to keep things nice to keep a quality tenant make things different and cost effective. I found this book helpful,innovative and great for anyone either living in a tiny apartment or in a big house. Recycling the trash and making it a treasure is my favorite part. If only everyone was that creative. Great...Great... book!

This book came out at just the right time for our family. We are working on a building project and really wanted to use as much green materials as we could find. This guide is so complete, we feel like we should start all over again and use everything in the book. The descriptions are clear, the format is clean and the resources are easy to contact. Must have been like getting the Sears Catalog a hundred years ago!

Includes Artificial Turf

To be honest, the following comment is based SOLELY on the information on this book provided by Amazon. I HAVE NOT READ THIS BOOK. With that said, one of the images of the book's content includes a manufacturer of Artificial Turf. I cannot tell you how angry that it appears as if the US Green Building Council (which created and operates the LEED series of programs) is giving a number of credits for projects that install artificial turf. I agree that plastic lawn covering eliminates pesticide application, and perhaps less irrigation is used, but has the downside of plastic lawn covering been totally ignored? 1) Because photosynthesis is absent, the cooling effect of natural ground cover is eliminated which adds to the urban heat island effect. Some residential owners of plastic lawn covering water their plastic to cool the stuff off! 2) Plastic produces zero oxygen and absorbs zero carbon dioxide. 3) Plastic lawn covering requires a higher amount of energy to produce, deliver, install and maintain over decades than a natural lawn. 4) Natural lawns are friendlier to a more balanced ecological system promoting cycles of life in various natural systems. 5) The life expectancy of plastic lawn covering is 8-10 years according to the manufacturer of FieldTurf sport field installations. What happens to old plastic lawn covering? 6) The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the danger of children ingesting lead found in especially older installations of plastic lawn covering is acceptable, the CPSC still recommends children wash their hands after playing on plastic surfaces especially before eating. To be fair, FieldTurf products since 2003 contain no lead. So what about the other manufacturers and older installations? I think the only thing that's green regarding plastic lawn covering is the color. Yes this is a rant on one particular entry in this book, but how many more examples of greenwashing are in this book?
