LEGO Castle Dragon Mountain 70403 (released Summer 2013)

This is an interesting set to say the least. It features the main fortress for the dragon soldiers in the 2013 Castle series, and being the dragon soldiers, it includes a dragon. Construction of this set is tricky, as it includes many decorations and non-standard pieces. If you're buying this set for a younger child (ages 6-7), be prepared to help.

This set is a must if you're collecting the rest of the Castle sets. Construction is a bit different than any of the other Castle sets do to the numerous decorations. Included in this set are a structure, a catapult, a dragon, and five minifigures.

Notes:
This set contains 376 pieces divided into three bags. The instructions are on one booklet, which is not bound to a sheet of cardboard. Paperweights required to keep it flattened while building.
The first bag builds two lion soldiers, the catapult and the dragon.
The second bag builds the tower, the princess, and a dragon soldier.
The third bag builds the wizard, the dragon's perch, and a bridge connecting the perch and the tower.

BONUS: This set contains an orange brick separator.

DRAGON:
I'm a little geeked by the dragon. From the pictures on the box, it is difficult to appreciate the size of the dragon. The dragon has a 13 inch wingspan, measures about 11 inches snout to tail, and stands about 6 inches tall when reared up on its hind legs. There is a pivot between the head and the neck, and a pivot between the neck and the body. The wings are adjustable, as well as the legs and arms. The mouth also opens and closes.

MINIFIGURES:
Included are two lion soldiers, one dragon soldier, a dragon wizard, and a lion princess.

My name is Landen and I'm reviewing this set. This is the second best set I've ever got in my life! (My other favorite is The Pharoah's Quest pyramid). The dragon is big, has lots of detail, and doesn't break as easy as some other sets. The wizard has a cool suit and I like the knight with the sword. It was pretty easy to build-I didn't have to ask for help much (I am 7 yrs old). Overall, you will like this set alot!

I have been a huge Lego fan since before I started kindergarten, and still have some of the pieces from those first sets I got as a child. I have been excited since they released these new sets, and have purchased all 5 released so far. I rated this set 5 out of 5 stars because even on its own, it is fun to build and set up, and it comes with several minifigs. I can only assume that someone interested in this set would be interested in others in the same theme, so those are listed below. Together they all rate 5 stars:

70400 - Forest Ambush - ***** +/- $ 14
70401 - Gold Getaway - ***** +/- $27
70402 - Gatehouse Raid - ***** +/- $30
70404 - King's Castle - ***** - +/- $125

My six year old adores this set. Has some great moving part features! He is six and had this thing put together in no time... Usually he spends a couple hours on a set this size, so either the age rating is slightly off or this set just goes together more smoothly.

Our son asked for this set Christmas 2014. He has it set up on a shelf in his bedroom. Our seven children have all loved Legos, and we have a piles of them stored in those big Rubbermaid storage totes. When it comes to storage, I'd rather add on to a toy we already have a place for than buy a new type and come up with a way and a place to store it, so we've kept adding to the Lego collection from year to year. Even our adult children will sit and build with their younger siblings as a way to keep their relationships strong. Legos are a wonderful toy that teaches children to think in three dimensions. It also improves creativity, thinking skills, problem solving, communication, and reading skills. Building can also help with fine motor skills. There are many lesson plans that incorporate Legos on the internet which make these building bricks much more valuable for your child's learning. Some teachers use them for math manipulatives. They are so versatile for learning, it's no wonder why they are so popular and have been around since the 1940s. We highly recommend Lego products and purchase them quite frequently ourselves. -W

I love LEGO, and this set was a lot of fun to build and play with. In the past, LEGO has sometimes had problems with its larger animal models looking nice, but that was not the case here. The dragon is super cool looking and has lots of points of articulation so it can be posed in many places and ways. The castle is pretty nifty too, and it comes with enough LEGO men to set up a real scene. I waited until it was on sale to buy (45% off), but I would probably purchase it at a higher price knowing how nifty of a set it is.

From the moment the Lego Castle set was announced, and heavily advertised my (then) five-year-old was obsessed with collecting the entire lot ... Which, thanks to grandparents, birthdays and Christmases, he eventually did. And while the LEGO Kings Castle was definitely the jewel of this series, this dragon with mini-tower, which always served as the bad guy's lair in our house, was a close second favorite, especially after the dragon appeared in the The LEGO Movie.

Though the rest of the castle pieces have long since been demolished during various Lego redistricting projects, the dragon remains, fully assembled, on my son's Lego table ... Which is a fancy term for his old train table, now outfitted with LEGO Green Building Plate (10" x 10"). Anyway, the dragon comes mostly fully assembled, with a large body piece, wings, etc., which is part of what has made it so long-lasting. The other element is that it just looks really, really cool and is perfect for invading other peaceful Lego settlements, not to mention interacting with the various Lego Movie set pieces he's built in the year or so since originally getting this.

Anyway, as the lone remaining (assembled) survivor of the Castle series, I figured this dragon set deserved a shout out.
