Lego as usual has given us a great 2014 Christmas Advent Calendar. Pop the box open on December 1st and every day you will get to open a door that reveals a "mini-build" for an item to populate the holiday scene. Every year the figures vary, so it's a fun tradition to follow even if you have done these before. Even if you aren't interested in the religious aspect of Advent, the countdown-to-Santa is still fun for the little ones.

For 2014, Lego has released three different advent calendars---this City theme, a Star Wars version, and a Friends ("girly") one. I always buy this City-theme Advent Calendar early in the fall: Lego makes a certain number of each theme and when they're sold out, that's it!

Pros: fun mini holiday-themed Lego project every day in December! What's not to love?
Box is cleverly designed for use and reuse--a flap of the box swings open to reveal a Lego Cityscape backdrop with numbered doors. So exciting! Each day, you help build and populate the holiday city.

Cons: the outside of the calendar box reveals most of the surprises that are inside--so they aren't surprises when you open the doors. My preschool-aged son studied his calendar last year before we began and saw what was coming. In future years, I hope this may be solved by a peel-away exterior that leaves the box blank on the outside once it's in use and on display. This is a small concern. I covered my box exterior with colored duct tape this year so we get real surprises. And the flap that poems to show a Cityscape is great.

My boys (6 & 9) absolutely LOVE the Lego City Advent Calendar. They look forward to this every morning before school. My kids take turns (one gets the even numbers and the other gets the odd numbers) so neither misses out. We also get them each a chocolate advent calendar.

Last year we went to Disney World over Thanksgiving and forgot to buy the calendar. The Lego store at Downtown Disney was sold out and they said by Thanksgiving you're lucky to find them anywhere, so BUY IT NOW! Don't wait or you will have to pay almost double on eBay (like I did). What a parent won't do so your kids aren't disappointed!!

For years I had searched for an exciting Advent calendar for my kids. Unfortunately, all I could find was these horrible cheap calendars with waxy chocolate. Lets just say it wasn't exciting for the kids. I stumbled on the Lego advent calendar at the big box bookstore and was immediately excited. It is sad that Legos get me excited, but my 6 year old is obsessed with Legos. He also wants a new toy everyday. I figured what a great way to amp up his excitement for Christmas and keep his toy obsession at bay until Santa comes down the chimney.

I decided to have St. Nick give this to him on December 6th (I live in Wisconsin we have St. Nick) he will have to catch up a little but I'm sure he will be fine with that.

I have overlooked the box and it looks like each day there is a new build/surprise to open. Little figures just like the ones that come with regular Lego sets. It will be a cute display for him to keep on his dresser in his room or on a shelf in the family room. Great find! Thank you LEGOS!

We loved our Lego City Advent Calendar even though we are adults. I think it is something that can be used over and over again and I plan to pass this particular calendar on to another family so they can have the same fun that we had. These calendars are a bit pricey- but for many days of entertainment I would say it is worth it- something a kiddo can look forward to each day of December that doesn't have chocolate!

My grandson is almost 5 and loves his advent calendar w/ the little figurines. For the most part he can build each piece. However, this may not be appropriate for some 4 to 5 year-old kids. If you purchase older sets for your little one, and he/she is good w/ legos; then this toy is appropriate. I am looking forward to next year's set!

By far one of the best Advent calendars out there. We are a bit over a week in on this calendar and my 7-year old son absolutely loves it. I'm excited to see what he's getting every day. My daughter is also doing the Lego Friends calendar and they play with their mini builds in the little scenes constantly. They look forward to it so much that they get fully dressed and ready for school without a problem so they can open that day's door. It's well done. So far he's opened a lot of mini-figures and food stands. I'm so happy I bought this early!

I missed out last year and could only find the Advent calendars from people that stocked up to gouge the rest of us that poorly planned, so I ensured I jumped on one as soon as I found it this year. My four year old loves opening up each new day's door and individually wrapped baggie to see what's next. He was a bit disappointed in the beginning and had to bring some legos over from our collection because with just the one piece it's not too fun to play with, but as the days go by, the fun keeps growing. The extra pieces included in most days are a hit as it allows my four year old to share extras from his city set with my six year old and her friends set (extra pieces there too, so sharing is going both ways). Some nights he's too tired to look at the picture and just understand how the pieces go together to build the day's item (some more complicated than others), but overall it's been pretty amazing to see him take a pile of pieces, build what the picture showed, integrate the scene and play as well as share. My kids do love legos, so that part doesn't hurt at all. Jump on these sets early each year.
