This is less of a basic, beginner Lego "block" set, but more so like a collection of odds and ends pieces (wheels, shapes, and other miscellaneous accessories) that allow your children (and even adults) to make all kinds of fun and interesting creations like a seahorse, helicopter, frog, or anything else your heart desires. There's even a few Lego people included. The set also comes with a handy guide that helped get our creative juices flowing by showing a several easy to follow diagrams on how to build a few things, as well as their level of difficulty (see photo of some of what we initially put together). Since there are also so many small parts in this set, I like that Lego clearly lays out the contents of the collection, showing how many pieces of each color and shape are included. Oh and I have to mention that I especially got a kick out of seeing some of the random and unique accessories included (for ex. a hockey stick, fish, crab, etc.). Overall, this is a really fun set that can be used alone, although I personally feel it serves more like an expansion pack, so I would definitely recommend getting additional play sets to add to this one (for instance the LEGO Classic Medium Creative Brick Box 10696).
I have three kids whom I homeschool, so we decided to break this box open at the end of our education one day for some fun! My middle child quickly began working on the ice cream/milkshake (as advertised), my 4 year old and I started on the helicopter together, and my 9 year old decided to do her own thing and came up with an aquatic scene.
This isn't the largest set, but it's either a really good starter set for the child who hasn't experience LEGO yet, OR a great creativity set to give to the child who already adores LEGO. At one point or another, every kid loves LEGO, am I right? Even I had fun with this set.
So cute, so many unique pieces. Definitely recommended!
There are the usual caveats—don’t leave pieces out to be stepped on; use the box for storage, blah blah blah— but this set is the bomb as a babysitter, an aid to imagination, and a way for the kiddos to create.
