**Update December 2013: this set has had a long run and is now finally out of stock at both Amazon (proper) and Lego. It will likely be delisted soon from Lego's catalog. This was a great set, but prices are rising well above the MSRP of 29.99. If you can find them at MSRP, sets #31010 and #31012 are very good. Set 31025, Mountain Hut, will be available 1/1/14, hopefully at the same price as the Log Cabin.**

Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.

This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature.

This set gives you a little more than 350 pieces for 30 bucks retail, which is a wonderful deal for Legos just in and of itself. However, as a set, it is a somewhat fast and easy build - my 7 year old daughter was able to build it on her own with very little assistance from me in about 2 hours. The cabin is very sturdy once built, for Legos of course. Because the cabin is formed like a house, it is a simple structure to put your mind around, and I think would be an excellent first set for a child that has never used Lego's before, but may be interested in them. My daughter loves this one, and I am very pleased that Lego has finally decided to include a Lego person in these sets, it greatly increases the playability factor.

Bought this set as a gift for my 7 year old granddaughter who happens to be a Lego fanatic. She mentioned not having a Lego set for constructing a house, so it was a 'no-brainer' for me to pick this set. The Amazon price and reputation for quick delivery were also big factors, especially when the gift can be sent directly to a recipient that lives a thousand miles from my home. She loves the Lego Cabin set and already has her eye on more Lego home sets. All my grandchildren (and their parents) love playing with Legos together!

Granma picked a winner! My 7 year old boy is a whiz at Legos - he can build just about anything, including the much more difficult ones, but this log cabin was his favorite Lego piece at Christmas! All he wanted was more Lego sets. There's no end! His room is full of Lego projects! Apparently a child can use their imagination using the Lego figures (buy separately) very easily, making up stories or pretending. I don't know, but the child sure made me happy with his love for this particular piece, and he had it built in no time at all!

This was a gift for my son and he loves it! You can build a log cabin, a country retreat, or a river hut. It has 355 pieces and is meant for ages 7-12. The creator sets are great, they use less complex pieces, ones that you can actually use to build many other things. I love this because if you lose a piece in one of these sets, you have a much better chance of being able to find a replacement piece, or better yet, already having one on hand, even if it is a different color. I also really love that there are multiple ways to put this together. My son just put together a set that was over 800 pieces in less than an hour, so with the prices of lego sets, you can imagine how much it costs to keep him busy with this sort of thing, but they are so great for encouraging their creative side and learning how to follow instructions and put things together.

My grandson absolutely loves this set. He loves to build one of the cabins, tear it down and build another one. He is only 4-years-old, but he can follow the directions easily. There are three booklets--one for each of the cabins. The instructions are broken down into sections that build upon one another, making it easy for even a younger child who cannot read. He does know his numbers, so he can tell at a glance how man of each part he needs, and the instructions show him exactly where the pieces need to go. This set keeps him busy for hours!

I'm pretty selective with the sets I buy because Legos are too expensive not to be.

This is a very good basic set.
Nothing exceptional but a good collection of pieces, and the cabins are fun to play with once assembled.

(Amazon does weird things with Lego prices, so I recommend pricing it elsewhere before buying)
