The main reason why I like this set and rate it highly is because it leaves a lot to the imagination and requires the builder to be creative and experiment with their own ideas. Like other posters have stated, the set DOES NOT include instructions for building all of the examples shown. . . but what it does include is enough pieces to improvise, if need be. Unlike the predetermined Lego sets, there are very few constraints and most of the pieces can be used to construct additional items.
I do not agree with the opinion that this set is only for teachers (in a school setting). Anyone can be a teacher and parents are their children's first teacher. By giving their child(ren) the Lego Education sets, they are helping to build their creative skills in addition to enhancing their analytical skills. Children are capable of dreaming up the greatest creations and I believe that the Lego Education sets provide one method for them to accomplish that.
Maybe I am biased but some of my greatest memories from my childhood toys was sitting down with my sister with what seemed like THOUSANDS of Lego pieces and making crazy creations. Like so many of our peers, we were not limited by what we were "told" to build by instructions. . .but liberated by our imaginations. And we learned a lot from the experience (even through frustrations of not having the "right" piece or being able to get the pieces apart!).Read more ›
There are 15+ "items" to build, from airport buildings, to airplanes, rockets, satellites, and lunar exploration vehicles. It is a nice variety.
There is something very different about this set, however, that parents need to know before purchasing: ***Not all of the assembly instructions to make every item pictured on the outside are provided! This set comes with five "inspiration cards". The inspiration cards provide the assembly instructions to construct the orange/white moon car, the red airplane, satellite, and baggage check/security station. Those are ALL the assembly instructions that come with the set.
You can download additional assembly instructions to construct the space shuttle, passenger plane, cargo plane, baggage transport vehicle/trolley, and the helicopter from the Lego-Education website. However, Lego does not provide, anywhere, the instructions for building the rocket, air traffic control tower, air terminal, lunar lander, lunar rover vehicle (blue/gray), or the crater exploration area.
I called Lego and asked about the missing instructions. They said that this set is meant to engage the creative process in the child and that the remaining items are simple enough to build that they do not require instructions.
Fine, but this can be frustrating to the child. Most kids are expecting to follow a set of instructions. Also, when trying to construct the item from just the picture alone, you run the risk of using Lego pieces needed for another item, in the item you are building, etc.
Lego should tell buyers upfront that all the instructions are not provided. It's still a great set, and lots of fun, but just keep in mind that it is different from other Lego sets.
He was only 3 at the time and this set contains MANY tiny pieces, so we kept its use to supervised playtime with myself to avoid any choking hazard issues. (Surely, a sacrifice for myself, as I am a closet lego geek.)
The set comes with quite an array of different shapes, sizes and colors as well as several cards full of sample ships you can build. The case it comes in is nice and strong with a locking top.
One thing I would like to see is some compartments in the case itself - we use ziplog baggies to keep various types of pieces in loosely related groups rather than spend lots of time sifting through one big pile of pieces.
My son is going on 6 and I am now absolutely amazed at his spaceship building prowess. After almost 3 years this set still keeps him busy building, rebuilding and "flying" all of his ships, stations and "space doggies" for hours on end.
Our almost 3 year old daughter has now picked it up as we build together -I think I can safely say this may be the best money we've spent on any toy in the house.
It breeds concentration, imagination and a fun group play time.
