The game hangs very often. If it had no bugs, it would be the best LEGO game of them all. The characters can cast different spells and potions, fly in brooms, etc. Hogwarts is huge with many places to explore. The graphics are beautiful and detailed and the different actions each character can do are numerous.
The worst bug was in the part with Fluffy (the 3-headed dog). It didn't behave correctly, so that the solution to the puzzle didn't work. Restarting the game didn't help either. I had to create a new save point and play the game all over again. The second time it worked well.
Hanging around the Leaky Cauldron would cause the game to hang every time, so I would try to leave it as soon as possible. Sometimes, one of the Xbox controllers would work and not the other (I played it with the controllers plugged to my PC).
I noticed if I completed a chapter and waited until the new chapter started before quitting the game, most of the time the game would not hang. This could be psychological because I have only played the story game once (no free play).
My recommendation is to wait until the game drops in price to $10 and then buy it. That way you won't feel so bad putting up with the bugs and restarting the chapters. I was able to finish the game, but I'm not going to try free play. It's just too buggy. I deleted it from my hard drive and am now playing the Pirates of the Caribbean Lego game. So far that one has no bugs (Crossing my fingers).
UPDATE June 10,2011: I forgot to mention that another bug was that the only characters I could play were Harry, Hermione, Ron, and some Hufflepuff boy. None of the characters I bought or got in the story were added to the list so some areas that required characters from other houses remained off limits.
I guess it's my fault for being in a hurry--maybe if I'd chosen the disc instead of the download, Amazon would let me get my money back. (P.S.: I'm on Windows 10 and it works just fine, what little I played of it. I have a Core i3 processor, terabyte HD...maybe having six gigs of memory does it? I'm not a big enough computer guru to know...)
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Obviously this is not the first time that this has happened and upon researching the problem I have found this: I read some reviews for the PC version of Lego Harry Potter on amazon, and apparently a lot of people had complaints. Apparently it crashes and locks up a lot on Windows 7, and people had to dumb their PCs down to get it to stop being so crashy. Of the 6 reviews, 5 gave it 1 star and 1 gave it 2 stars. It looks like TT games did not do a good job for the PC. The game supposedly only works well on Vista or XP.
I would tell people do not bother to buy the program if it's not going to work properly and there are no fixes.
Don't buy the PC version of the game. If you can, find a PS3 version and have a ball!
The System Requirements descriptions lists a 3 button mouse as a minimum requirement. So, we got one, and wasted an extra $32 on this game. It's a game, and I enjoy it. I also bought Years 5-7 at the same time, so I hoped I'd be able to use the mouse there as well. I don't like spending a lot of money on PC games, but this was one I knew I'd use, so I was willing to spend it. I'm angry though, that I wasted my money on a mouse that I don't need and can't now return.
***ADDITIONAL COMMENT: When I contacted Amazon to complain about the mistake in the description, they did respond with a good will credit, so Amazon's reputation remains solid with me.
