Product Description

Product Description

The walled fortress at Helm's Deep is under attack by the mighty Uruk-hai army. The forces of men, elves, and a dwarf must do everything they can to stop them from breaching the fortress walls. Can they prevent the Berserker Uruk-hai planting the bomb and blowing up the wall? Will they stop the enemy climbing up the siege ladders? The people of Rohan have never faced such a deadly threat! Includes 8 minifigures: Aragorn, Gimli, Haldir, King Théoden, Berserker Uruk-hai and 3 Uruk-hai. Ages 10 yrs. +.

The battle for Middle Earth rages on in the LEGO Battle of Helm's Deep fortress set. Help Aragorn, King Théoden, Gimli, and Haldir repel the Uruk-hai army by stationing your men atop the outer fortress wall, deploying your catapult, and climbing the tower to blow The Horn of Helm Hammerhand. At 20 inches wide, this formidable set features an opening main gate, a hidden door, an exploding wall, and eight mini-figures that allow kids ages 10 and up to recreate the signature battle from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Fortress Features Outer Wall and Modular Construction

The Helm's Deep fortress set features a 6-inch-high outer wall, a 9-inch tower with horn, and an inner throne room. When the three pieces are connected together, this set measures 20 inches wide. To faithfully recreate the famous battle, the fortress boasts an opening main gate, side-door attack function, catapult, and exploding wall. But beware, as there is also a siege ladder and bomb that the relentless Uruk-hai warriors can use to breach the wall's defenses.

For more versatile play, the modular construction of the components allows the fortress sections to be rearranged to your liking. The included sticker sheet enhances the fortress details.

Mini-Figures Let You Pit Good Against Evil

Eight LEGO mini-figures are included with the Helm's Deep set, including Aragorn, King Théoden, Gimli, Haldir, Berserker Uruk-hai, and three Uruk-hai warriors. Each detailed figure can be equipped with a wide range of included accessories, such as swords, single- and double-bladed axes, bows, shields, torches, and spears. A horse figure with a movable head and back legs takes King Théoden into battle.

Assembling Helm's Deep

Building such an impressive fortress of 1,368 pieces took our testers approximately four hours to complete. Four colorful instruction booklets have large pictures to offer sufficient guidance.

Once assembled, Helm's Deep offers several detailed play areas. Its broad size makes it an ideal play set to reenact battles. Our testers appreciated the fine attention to detail, including flags, torches, and goblets, as well as the moving set pieces, such as the gate, catapult, and collapsible wall.

If you decide to buy this set, make sure you have a large area to put it. It takes up approximate shelf space of 20 inches across by 15 inches deep. The tower in this set is about 10.5 inches tall. While this set is modular and sections can be removed, you won't want to display anything but the entirety of it all! :)

This set is so big it requires FOUR instruction manuals. The instruction manuals are sealed to a sheet of cardboard, meaning no paperweights are required. This set also contains NINE bags of LEGO bricks. The bags are numbered 1-9, you only need to open one at a time to construct the set.
The minifigures are spread throughout the bags, so this set goes together rather quickly. Bags 1 and 2 construct the entrance, bag 3 constructs the stairs and the left rounded corner, bag 4 the right rounded corner. Bags 5 and 6 construct the tower, Bag 7 constructs the wall, Bags 8 and 9 construct the throne room.

Included with this set is an orange plastic brick separator!

This set includes 8 minifigures, including Gimli, King Théoden, Haldir and Aragorn. Also included are four Uruk-hai.
Three of the Uruk-hai have helmets, two have chest plates shields and swords, one has a battle-axe, The Uruk-hai without armor has a torch.
Gimli has a helmet, one great axe and one axe.
King Théoden has ornate armor (helmet and chest plate), along with a round shield and sword. He rides a horse.
Haldir has a red cape and a long bow.
Aragorn has a sword.
Also included is a rat.

Note about the horse: A special feature of this horse is that it's back half (legs and tail) is able to pivot, along with its head. This allows the horse to rear up on its hind legs.

9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep is a 1368 piece LEGO set initially released in May of 2012 with a LEGO store price of $129.99. It is part of the first wave of LEGO sets featuring Lord of the Rings. This set allows you to build Helm's Deep, a pivotal location in the LotR volume/movie The Two Towers. The set also includes 8 minifigures (Aragorn, Gimli, King Theoden, Haldir, a berserker Uruk-hai, and three additional Uruk-hai), a horse, ladder, and various accessories (weapons, armor, etc..). If you looked at the box and thought, "Isn't Legolas the Elf in this set?" The technical answer is, "No, that is Haldir.. but the figures are so similar, most people won't be able to tell them apart." Legolas is in set 9473 the Mines of Moria - take a look at the box art of both and see if you can tell the difference between the elfs beyond outfits).

Lord of the Rings fans will love this set. It is pricey, but it is also a very nice rendition of Helm's Deep. The Horn of Helm Hammerhand has been noticeably done (the trumpet-looking things coming out of the top of the tower), there is a collapsing wall section over a culvert/stream, and a path made with plates that simulates the ramp/path into Helm's Deep. For this price, though, I would have liked to have received more horses with this set (that's a key part of the movie, after all) and some extra spear-weapons (also from the movie).

As a fan of the LEGO Castle and Kingdoms lines, I'm also pretty happy. It is nice to see that LEGO has finally moved away from the traditional castle design they've used so often with only minor modifications (at least for a little while). There are enough bricks here that, if you get tired of Helm's Deep, you can make another nice castle with relative ease.

Overall it's a great set, lots of detail and lots of tiny fiddly pieces to put together, which to me is the whole point of legos. I extended the thrill of putting it together by building it up layer by layer instead of in the 'click-together' sections the instructions suggested.

The only criticisms that I have are that more thought was put into the way things looked from the outside of the walls than the way they worked inside them. Guess I'll have to get some more legos and see what I can't do to correct that.

On the plus side, I picked up the 'Uruk-hai Army' expansion set on an impulse and am pleased to say that it clicked together with this set easily. It can either be stuck on the end or inserted between the 'stream' wall section and the keep.

As to whom I would recommend this set: anybody who loves legos and anybody who loves LotR. Heck, I may even buy it again for myself.

My son likes it. We'd have given it 5 stars, but as is common these days with Lego's lower quality, the minifigures crack easily. The feet split from attaching them to blocks. Their torsos split just from being attached to their legs. And their arms and hands crack easily. My kids are extremely gentle with their toys, and generally treat the figures as display items. Yet we have over 80 minifigs from numerous sets that have cracked parts. Some broke within a month or two.

I reached out to Lego several times through their customer service website, and phone. They told me that oils from fingerprints, dirt and dust can cause the problem. So I guess if your kids wear cotton gloves while handling their toys, they should have less of an issue. What a joke... they might as well print "WARNING: Handling these bricks can cause damage to them. Not intended as a play toy." It's pretty upsetting to a child to have a critical part of their new favorite toy break within a few weeks.

They then kindly offered to replace the broken parts. But have yet to follow through with their offer after waiting for over a month for them to reply. Very disappointing, as I have minifigs from when I was a kid that have never cracked. Google it, there are countless complaints about this problem. But they deny it. The quality of their plastic (or their design) has really gone down hill, yet their prices haven't. I think this is one of the last sets we'll be buying as a result.
