But that wasn't enough to take a star off, this has too many good things in its favor, and it's a very cool set. It exceeds the Lego average of about 10 bucks per 100 pieces, so it's definitely a good deal.
Even the small side vehicle, the Crab, is very cool in this set.
Visually it's stunning when complete, those "porcupine quills" really give it a "don't mess with me" vibe. It even has a trigger driven spinning electrical disc on the top.
And *SIX* minifigs - not often you find that many in a kit this size.
We've never gotten into the Ninjago Lego cartoons, but what we've seen for the movie in the trailers has us getting excited, and these kits are really pumping up our enthusiasm.
Minifigures included are Ed and Edna, Jay's father and mother, respectively. What's fun about their inclusion in this set is that there have
never been physical minifigure versions of them before until now, previously only appearing in the Ninjago TV series.
The Jay minifigure in this set is the same one as in the other sets, but with his ninja mask. 3 other underwater-themed baddies are included, one
in a generic soldier outfit, one with a jellyfish-themed outfit and headpiece, and another with a crab-themed headpiece.
The bad guy's artillery in this set is a small crab-walker mech thing, complete with a chain gun and giant claw (which can grab unsuspecting minifigures).
The Lightning Jet itself has many uniquely-built sections that make up the full model, giving the finished model a very aerodynamic/sci-fi look. At the
base of the model is a handle with which you can pick the model up and/or use as a display stand. Some of the play functions in this set include an
opening cockpit, firing missile, and a mechanism on the handle which allows what looks like an "electrical field" to be generated when the mechanism is triggered.
There are a few odd design choices that can affect stability and parts staying on the model. Some of the blue panelling on the top
and bottom of the model, for example, is held in place by only one Technic axle pin. It also would have been nice if the front landing gear piece came
in blue for accuracy's sake and had a way to fold up.
Overall this is a pretty fun LEGO Ninjago Movie set, and I recommend it. Definitely not the best one, but if you're a fan of Jay, you should consider picking it up.
The build was very satisfying and easy. It wasn't too repetitive and it keeps you interested and excited. It is like nothing Lego has come up with before, it really stands out amongst other builds.
The minifigure selection is excellent and the price to part ratio is fantastic.
I have nothing but good things to say about this set. I highly recommend it.
Only complaints: the jet works almost like a hand held gun, which you can hold and pull a trigger to rotate a center wheel. Very neat. But as a result, it doesn’t have a wide base and is unstable and top-heavy. Not sure if this is a design flaw or if Lego was trying to stay true to an animated design that isn’t very pragmatic in real life.
Also, the little spider vehicle for the villain had a gun that really shoots. Very neat, but again, not pragmatic since the Lego literally shoots across the room—I am not exaggerating. Good luck finding the “bullet” pieces.
The kit has 876 pieces and intended for an intermediate builder, but the build is straight forward to assemble. It took me a about 4 hours over a couple of days to complete the build. I am looking forward to assembling other Ninjago movie kits.
