And on one hand that sounds pretty neat. You get some ideas, you see the finished product, and you use imagination to kind of mentally reverse-engineer it so you can build it from your own stock. On the other hand, well, if you're looking for a book that includes a general collection of bricks included and a number of pages helping you build from that collection, you will be disappointed here.
Indeed, some of the structures in the book do require fairly specialized bricks, like the mini Slave I or the Cloud City landing pad. By specialized I mean bricks that are likely not in any but the more complete and comprehensive builder collections.
So I like the book for ideas or for perhaps learning some new building techniques, which is indeed the focus of the book. It doesn't pretend that everyone is going to be able to build every structure out of one's personal LEGO stock. But there are useful techniques for, say, making trees (in the Endor section) or for ways to add interesting detail to ships and such (adding pipes and things to the exterior is one technique described). As a supplemental there is some discussion of the Star Wars universe, as well as some information on how to "speak LEGO" (eg what a "plate" is and what the term "2x2 brick" means) which is interesting for newer LEGO builders.
Overall I wish the examples were more comprehensive and, perhaps, larger (they all seem to be either mini ships or very small rooms or sets...nothing bigger than that). It's difficult from the examples given to see how to integrate these techniques into a larger whole. That aside, it's a decent book and would be good for builders who have a large collection of LEGOs but need more ideas and different techniques to go to the next level.
I gave this 3 stars because I do enjoy reading about how things work and this book gives me tips on how to combine bricks to create different effects. My kids were less impressed and felt it was just OK. They're kit enthusiasts and were disappointed that this set only came with a small model and minifigure. I'm hoping they'll discover the utility of this book in the future. So, before buying this, think about why you want it.
The main problem with this book is that many of the models shown require some specialized pieces: curved bricks, inverted slopes, grooved pieces, even some Technic pieces that even we don't own.
We own several of the old Lego Brickmaster series of book/kits that had directions on how to build several models with a small set of enclosed bricks. That series was heavy on directions and light on ideas. I wish this idea book also included and Brickmaster style set for multiple models.
