This is Lego's fourth iteration of the Star Wars X-Wing Fighter (not including the mini-scale and Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) versions). The first was #7140 in 1999 (reprised in 2002 with set #7142). Lego came out with set #4502 in 2003, and #6212 in 2006. The UCS kit, #7191, came out in 2000 and retailed for $150. [UCS are large and intricate, and are geared mainly toward collectors rather than for play.] This latest set arrived in January of 2012. [Addendum, 7/2013] Lego released a new UCS X-Wing (#10240) in May of this year which retails for $200.

This latest version is, arguably, the best of the non-UCS versions. It is very much an evolution of 6212. Like the earlier set, it has working x-wings (they open and close using a gear at the rear of the craft), an opening cockpit, and retractable nose gear. Where the set differs is in the mini-figures and some key design features. The prior set included six mini-figures whereas this set includes only four: Luke, R2-D2, Porkins, and R5-D8. If you don't immediately recall Porkins, he was "Red Six" in Episode IV; during the final battle, he is the one screaming as his ship disintegrates around him. Porkins and R5-D8 are new mini-figures, and the droid sports a new conical top (as opposed to the usual spherical top of R2-D2 and the like). The design itself differs in a few big ways from 6212. First, the lower wings are now reversed so that the studs are upside down. This is what the UCS version did and it gives the model a cleaner look from the underside. Second, Lego reworked the wing folding mechanism and structure. This is important because set 6212's wings had a bad habit of breaking during play (due to how the rubber bands pulled against the bricks). Third, the engines and the guns are, I believe, more accurately rendered.

not going to lie, i'm 34 years old and have no kids.

it's been about 25 years since i touched my last lego, and boy did i love legos!

making this unit was so much fun!

just knowing how the wing moves.........incredible!

it took me about 30 minutes to put it together. those 30 minutes were THROUGHLY enjoyed!

i'm going to wait for the millenium falcon to go on sale, i would love to build that unit!

Great value in purely a bricks per dollar sense. As a "classic" Star Wars item I was as excited about this build as my 6 year old. some long a complex instructions but we tackled it in one sitting. Great fun. The mechanics of the wings is fantastic. Sturdy enough for play and not just "display". A year after building it, my son still has the X-wing put together. It has not been recycled for parts into another project. Now that really says something for the model design. Great job Lego!

This is my third set that I've purchased, but the first I've ordered from this site. I'm still waiting for this to come in, but I've had great fun building the last X-Wings. This set gives great detail and looks relatively close to the movie X-Wing save the rear. The design for this latest set is much sleeker, especially on the fuselage and the cannons. Attaching the wings to the fuselage was slightly tricky, but doable. The stickers for the round engine piece, however, was an absolute pain to get right without messing up. All in all, I would highly recommend this set for any lego collector. I would not, however, recommend this for a beginner UNLESS they like a challenge.

Shopped the X-wing fighter all around, and even with other Retailers running Legos promos and sales, found that Amazon's prices were consistently better and more convenient (1 click, and 2 days later, poof...with no wasted time or gas)

This was a fun lego project and a very good product. Having two sets of mini figures and astromech droids is very nice.

It has two issues though...
1) The astromech droid is in sideways. I know the more spendy version (200 bucks or more!) doesn't have this issue... Not too big of an issue but it's still there.
2) The S-foil (wing) open/close mechanism slips. Especially when trying to open. The 'fix' is to use one set of rubber bands, but the s-foils won't stay closed. This reduced my rating by 1 star.

This is has already become a classic set, despite the fact that LEGO have released two sets of the famous X-Wing in this scale in the past. While the price was high at the initial release, the $48 price point (as of the time of this review) seems very reasonable and as I'm trying to build a 5 wing squadron, I'm nearly there and thrilled with the quality of the build, the design and the durability of this set. Many of the more complicated LEGO sets have a tendency to be flimsier than their more simple siblings, but this ship is solid all the way through, except for the obvious thruster and S-Foil blaster elements, which can't be helped. The minifigures are great here as well: Luke (with a ton of details on the figure), Jek Porkins and two R2 units. The whole set can be assembled in about 40 minutes to an hour (depending on how well you work when building the identical pairs of wings) and though I've lost one small set of the elastic bands that keep the wings closed, any small white band will work as a replacement. When you factor in LEGO has built this set in 1:1 scale for display in Legoland, this will always be a famous set and one that any Star Wars or LEGO fan should have in their possession.
