I'm more into free form building and experimenting than specifically building the models as described. I'm also in my 30s and while my 5 year old son loves his Legos he isn't quite up to Technic's level yet.
The pull back motor has a surprising amount of power and is a good size that is easy to build around. It is much easier to "make something that goes" than with LEGO Technic Power Function Accessory box (8293) due to the number of pieces required (motor and battery pack at least) and their large size. And of course the pull back motor does not require batteries.
This set can be combined with LEGO Technic Race Car 42011 (the other set with a pull back motor) to create a dragster via online instructions, I have both sets and the dragster is pretty cool. The wheels on this one (the off road 42010) are better on carpet than 42011.
The only "Con" is that this is not a very large model and is probably best specifically for the pull back motor as an addition to a collection of Technic parts.
Actually, LEGO Technic has become the new favorite of my ages 10+ crowd, while younger brothers like LEGO City.
I like that the Technic sets offer challenging assemblies that work great. Make them think.
And at the end, we had a cool toy to race with other pull-back toys and to jump over things. More versatile than the race car kit due to the larger tires and higher clearance.
Only unfortunate bit is that it is not compatible with the powered technics pieces, so it cannot be made to be fully remote controlled.
