On the plus side, if what I just stated doesn't bother you (i.e., you're only going to be dehydrating fruit chunks and apple slices, etc.), than you will love the durability of this construction. The box also says that the dehydrator is BPA-free, even though it's not mentioned in the description.
Here is the only con: the hole in the middle of each tray makes it messy to pour out the dried foods without the food slipping through the hole. Imagine having a piece of notebook paper in your hands full of dry much rooms only with a 3 inch hole in the middle. Now tilt the paper towards a bowl or whatever. A lot of food will go through the hole. I will get this part figured out. All in all I really like this dehydrator.
[update 20120505] Contacted manufacturer, they told me about 10 year warranty for the base. I shipped them the base of this unit (under $11 from USPS), about 3 weeks later I got it back in a working condition again. There was no communication from the manufacturer about ever receiving the unit, fixing it, or sending it back to me - a bit annoying, but in the end they shipped it back to me and it seems to be working fine now. Bumping my rating up to 4 stars.
Note the bottom racks seem to dry very slightly faster than top trays so you may have to rotate to even out the drying or unload them earlier... I tend to check the food as drying is nearing completion... Inevitably some pieces dry faster than others which get removed while the others get more time... Hmmmm... What to dry today?
I have, at this point in time, done a few batch's of Jerky, several batch's of various fruit veggies and herbs, so I can say with some degree of certainty that I have some degree of believability in my reviewing comments.
I wish it had a timer...there that's it...that's the only negative.
It's easy to clean.
Its very quite.
They trays are easy to swap from top to bottom and are deep enough to handle what I put in them,
I am going t order a few more trays....
