For whatever reason, the monitor, although advertised has having Displayport 1.4 & it's a menu choice as well, all I'm getting are Displayport 1.2 speeds (5.4 Gbps x4 lanes). Have tried several well known branded cables, same result, and while my GPU isn't the latest, the EVGA GTX 1070 FTW does have three true DP 1.4 ports, as well as one HDMI 2.0(b) and some version of DVI-D which I've not used.
The true speed of Displayport 1.4 is 32.4 Gbit/s (or 8.1 Gbps x 4 lanes), a far way from 21.6 Gbps, as shown in picture. There's no secret to making this happen, as long both the video card & monitor are DP 1.4 compliant. At time of purchase, not only Amazon, several online retailers stated it was a DP 1.4 compliant monitor. So there's some misinformation floating out there & LG has several similar models, most a step above mine, also claiming to have DP 1.4, so for that reason alone, will likely not repurchase the brand.
Also, the brightness seems to have a mind of it's own (why the 4 Stars for that), a Web page will often initially be shown as bright, then scroll down & it gets dark. Not all the time, yet at least 5-6 times per day on the PC or Displayport, although not when using the Amazon Fire TV 4K or Roku Ultra on HDMI.. Maybe I got a lemon, who knows? Had I thought to check the speed within the return period, surely would had went back. Am hoping for a firmware update to correct the issue, so far the only software offered are for screen control
As for movies, these look great on the HDMI ports, no issues whatsoever. Beautiful screen, looks like a regular smart TV when using these devices, plus the Hulu app on the PC (oddly, which unlike Web pages, doesn't darken).
Tried the Freesync recently to see how the screen would look, maybe it's because I have a NVIDIA GPU, it's very bright & type is fuzzy. I didn't use the G-SYNC option on my PC because the monitor was listed as incompatible, didn't want to risk damage. I presume this is for gaming, of which I don't play any. Otherwise, would had purchased a G-SYNC monitor.
Final thoughts & conclusion, the LG 27UL500-W 27-Inch UHD is a nice monitor with a major flaw. While for my purposes, may never 'see' the missed speed, although if a gamer, surely would, as (most of) these folks knows how to setup their equipment before starting.
Be sure to test all of the ports before using, most modern GPU's has both HDMI 2.0(b) & Displayport 1.4. Google the specs for the latter, I can't include links here, mine is way off from the official VESA specs.
Long story short, my unit was having an issue where the monitor will not lit after quick/abrupt shutdowns. If I pull the power cord, or really having a power outage while the monitor is on, it will not turn back on. Twice I was able to bring this monitor back to life with a cold reboot; it finally broke after the third try. Luckily I was covered by the very generous 1 year LG warranty and was able to send this unit back around Sept 23th; the unit was received according to LG on the 30th, despite it being delivered several days earlier. After that, dead silence for a good 3 weeks. I checked the status of my repair on LG's repair tracking site, nothing was updated and my appointment was still pending. Frustrated, I called the customer service and was told a part needed for the repair will arrive on Oct 26th, a Saturday; now I call that bullcrap as my monitor was fixed and shipped that Friday. The next Tuesday I got it back, I found there are two pieces of dust INSIDE the LCD glass. If you care enough to zoom in and see my misery, those two bastards are clearly not your average dead pixels. They are way larger and magnitudes more in annoyance. So here I am again, starting another repair case; I merely own this beauty for 4 months and am forced to waste another month for repair!
With that said, if you win the monitor lottery and would not have to go through LG's service, this is a true beauty. You get a great IPS panel, stunning UHD for the price of a dell 2k; LG's OSD and features are quite impressive (better than ACER, sorry ACER) as well. But unfortunately I'm a sore loser and don't have much else to do except for venting my frustration on amazon. If your defective unit is doomed to break, at least do it before the return window closes.

The HDMI cable can’t support 4K@60fps. You need display port for that.
Few other points to consider:
- Works with MacBook pro , you get full 4K resolution. But like I mentioned only 30fps through HDMI.
- The monitor shakes quite a bit, the stand is not very sturdy. A light movement shakes the monitor. May want to invest on VESA mount if you want.
- The cable length is decent, Easily more than 2m.
- The monitor control is via a small 'joy stick', it's made of plastic and flimsy.
- The control interface/software of monitor is old-school style. The design of software is not that appealing.
- Didn't face any flickering so far.
Well just got the monitor everything seems to be good for now ,it goes very well with MacBook Pro .
Will use the monitor for editing purpose and update my review again .
Using it for mostly switching btw office work, Watching movies, Photo-edits using Photoshop. Having been using it for 1 week and feel color accuracy is 80% Ok. HDR is not the best but still does job during Movies.
The stand is pretty useless (no vertical/horizontal move (buy 27UK650). Just vertical tilt). Use a 100x100 vest mount based monitor desk mount for more friendly move and use.
Need adjust in Windows, fonts and etc. to make comfortable for your eyes to read texts, menus, and etc.
The most inconvenient things using that monitor is small fonts in software and games (not all software and games are ready for 4k monitors). So, that is why sometimes you need to switch to 2k resolution.
The power brick is little bit hot.
I recommend this monitor to buy to anyone who need 4k monitor for good price.
Anyway overall, very satisfied. If your budget allows, prefer the next models like 27UK650 or 27UL600, as they are HDR certified and have some international recognition.
