A near perfect balance of price, performance and features.

I have been on the market for an ultrawide monitor for quite some time now... and being one of those production minded gamers, finding the right balance between performance and image quality in an ultrawide has not been easy.... Until now.

Ok lets get onto the good stuff. At the time of writing this review, the display retailing for less than $599 USD. Toss in the fact you have a 34" IPS panel (21:9), 144hz refresh rate and a pretty solid resolution which helps it achieve those high refresh rates... It is pretty much one of the most competitively designed displays on the market right now. For me personally, the resolution is perfect since not all the software I will use will scale well with a higher resolution and 2560x1080 is overall less taxing on your graphics card.

LG may not have known it at the time, but this combo of features resonates very well with those of us who dabble in both work (content creation) and play.

For a product almost half the price of the competition, you kind of expect some corners to be cut when it comes to quality. I am happy to say the build quality left me surprised. Everything was extremely solid, nothing felt cheap. (highfive!)

Design wise, they chose to keep it simple. There are no flashy LED lights, no arbitrary plastic frills... just an edgy black frame with some red accents here and there. I do kind of wish there was some content/audio sensitive use of LED lights (As seen with Samsung's new CFG70 display) but over all, its a minor want based on personal taste.

While I originally intended to use one of my VESA mounts, I ended up liking the black and red stand so much that I opted to use it instead. It was simple to assemble, just hook in and it clicks into place. A button on the back will release it from the back the monitor. The legs come with some screws attached. A quick flick of the wrist and the monitor was assembled. Very little perceivable wobble. Well done LG.

In case you are wondering, the IPS panel was free of dead pixels. I also did not notice any significant light bleed... however that did change the longer I used the monitor.

After about 6 hours, the light leakage was noticeable. Unfortunately its something a bit too normal with these kinds of display. The good news is however that its not nearly as bad as what some of the Acer and Asus monitors showcased, but it is still there regardless.

Gaming on this ultrawide was fantastic. The 144hz refresh rate is extremely noticeable (in a good way) and the motion blur reduction features, when enabled also add to this effect. I must point out however that by using their motion blur reduction feature, the screen does get darker and a tad less saturated.

One peeve I have with the monitor involves the on screen controls. Rather to be more specific, the behavior of the game toggle they added to the on screen controls. There is a quick access for game related options, which is great, but it also changes the profile... and for me I want it to stay on the default custom profile. This means you have to go back into the more advanced settings and switch it back. Its a minor annoyance but something I would love to see fixed in some firmware updates.

Another awesome feature (for me at least) is LG's desktop controls. Basically you can control the settings of your monitor from within Windows, which is great if you don't want to fiddle around with the nob underneath the LG logo.

Conclusion... this is a great product with some minor flaws that are easily overlooked due to its competitive price point.

TLDR
Its a very competitively designed display that not only looks good, but delivers on the best balance of performance, features and price. Hard to go wrong with this one.

The monitor I received had a couple of issues. I used it with both AMD and NVidia cards, and it worked well with both at 144hz. When I tested blurring using the UFO test, it was very bad. At all test speeds, even the slowest, there was a long smear trailing behind the UFO, and there were no details visible on the UFO. I contacted LG about the v2 firmware, and the support person knew nothing of it. Occasionally/rarely, the monitor would flicker like scan line was out of sync.

My monitor also had a circle the size of an eraser diameter pretty close to the middle of screen that looked like an oil smudge, and it could not be cleaned. I think it might have been under the glass or screen. The strange thing is that mostly only appeared when the screen was green. The monitor did not have any dead pixels.

I own or have owned 4 2560x1080 monitors, and this one had the worst looking desktop out of them all. Text was very jagged. I would give it a C- for desktop presentation.

The uniformity was ok. It had some backlight bleeding, but no where near as bad as Acer monitors I have tried. This was a difficult monitor to calibrate and get good looking. The panel always looked washed out. Sharpness went from blurry to ok, to double images. Contrast did not seem very good. I eventually had to oversaturate slightly using the 6-color settings, and increase all the saturation settings a little.

I thought games looked ok, but I could not shake that the feeling that there was something inherently wrong with monitor beyond what I have mentioned. If the blurring is not an issue, and no grease stain, then it would have been a good gaming monitor.

I've read some reviews that complain about ghosting on this monitor and, at least with my hardware setup, I haven't experienced this whatsoever. It's a beautiful picture with incredibly smooth gameplay as long as you configure your video card and games up correctly, making sure that they are all running at 144hz. The colors were nearly perfect out-of-the-box, I think I removed a tiny bit of red upon setup.

For the price, this thing delivered and I'm pretty picky about my video fidelity in regards to gaming. I've looked at some others, both LG and other brands, and after physically watching them in action, they didn't persuade me to spend hundreds of dollars more to solve problems that this display doesn't even have.

Pros:
No ghosting in my experience (Battlefield 4/1, Overwatch, GTAV)
Excellent picture
Beautiful but not overly vibrant colors
Intuitive menu system with single joystick control
Wonderful out-of-the-box experience
Stand is extremely sturdy
Includes HDMI and Display Port cables

Cons:
Doesn't include b-type USB cord to feed the on-board ports (cheap solution and shouldn't be a game-changer)
CD with drivers (didn't need them anyway) was corrupted and wouldn't play in any drive that I tried (Blu Ray/DVD.) All three drives are known working

I've tested out the below monitors:

Samsung CFG 70 1080p - VA
Acer XB271HU 1440p - IPS
Asus MG279Q 1440p - IPS
Benq XL2730Z 1440p - TN
Benq XL2720Z 1080p - TN
Benq XL2430T 1080p - TN
LG 24GM77-B 1080p - TN

The 2430t / 2720z was really nice when tuned correctly and had great performance, but the color accuracy was better on the 24" LG TN.

The Samsung VA panel had the best color and brightness, but was slow and had some weird color shifting ghosting.

My goal was to find a screen with the below results:

Fastest response
Least amount of ghosting w/o using blur reduction
Very bright picture without blowing out colors
Best contrast and Color depth
Offer the most advantage in FPS games like BF1

After spending many hours with each one I was about to stick with the 24" LG 24GM77-B 144hz TN panel, BUT I ended falling in love with this 34" LG Ultrawide. I really enjoy the additional FOV, it actually helps out alot in game, target acquisition is easier. Being a very competitive gamer having a monitor that I'm able to achieve a solid 144fps w/ no major dips in BF1 while running ULTRA Terrain & Textures w/ post and a couple other things on low, TAA ON and 110% resolution scale is awesome. 1440p is overrated, it's not as big of a difference as people make it out to be, trust me I tried it multiple times and it wasn't worth the drop in fps. Unless you run a 1080ti 1440p monitors are not for the competitive player. I honestly didn't even see a huge difference, only for productivity does 1440p really shine. My setup is strictly for gaming. Sticking w/ 1080p FTW!
