The magnetic ear phones snap into place in the stylish, streamlined memory flex neck strap for easy storage, and they pop out just as easily for comfortable wear. The next clue was when I opened the cheap packaging and saw the accessories included: Headset, USB cable. That's it. The REAL LG headset comes with the headset itself, a USB cable AND a wall charger to plug that cable into, and three different sizes of earbuds. Even then, I thought it was just an attempt by LG to boost the profit margin another quarter cent.
The third clue was when I turned the headset on and the plastic it was made out of was so cheap and thin that I could see the blue light shining through the entire left half of it! Since that one was the first white one I had bought, I thought maybe that was to be expected and was just a little disappointed that I didn't stick with black.
Then I paired it with my phone and that was the "eureka" moment. It was so distorted I thought I was listening to AM radio turned WAY too high. I tried to listen to it for a few minutes while skating, but the bluetooth kept going in and out and between that and the sound quality I gave up and threw it back in my bag, relegating me to listen to the trash they were playing at the arena.
The one concrete piece of evidence I finally found of the headset I received being counterfeit was the sticker. The counterfeit product has the same model number "HBS-700", but the sticker on the headset does not looks the same as the one on the legitimate LG Tone. There is also a sticker on the right side of the headset that says something like "void to remove" or some nonsense like that, and that sticker is not present on the LG product.
My advice to you is to look at the seller's feedback before you buy. When I went to return the product, I saw that the seller had 0% positive feedback and there were four other people with the exact same comment as mine: "chinese knock-off LG Tone". Keep in mind this was a PRIME seller and was "fulfilled by Amazon", so I did not think I had to check on their legitimacy since Amazon was vouching for them. In the future, I will not make that mistake. Please save yourself the hassle of return shipping and check to see who you are buying from before you make this purchase. I feel the most sorry for people who buy a knock-off and have never had a REAL LG Tone to compare to.
I use these from my car - which is a stick shift convertible. So I need my hands free a lot, and obviously the wind/road noise in a convertible is very high. I also use this headset when working in my phone or office and want my hands free.
The headset has performed well in all situations. Sometimes (maybe once every 5 calls) the bluetooth connection drops). I quickly turn the headset on & off to reconnect and oftimes the caller doesn't even notice.
Call quality: Very good. Callers can hear me just fine when I'm driving in my convertible with the top down.
Music quality: fine, not great. Don't expect booming bass or noise cancellation.
Interface: Great. One quick press of the button and you can issue voice commands to your phone ("Call John Doe", etc.)
Exercising/jogging use? Not really. The headset bounces around a lot if you're too active and starts to spin around on your neck or even starts to fall off.
If the cords weren't falling apart (after 3+ years of use) or if the sound was great for music, I would have given it 5 stars.
PROS: Earbuds are comfortable, stay in place, and block 90% of external noise.
Bluetooth works 99.9% of the time. Carrying Nano in a pocket, once an hour a one-second pause may occur in proximity of strong external electronic fields or when moving/twisting/jarring/running.
Headset collar hides under collar of golf shirt/polo.
Controls are simple to use.
Battery charge is more than sufficient for 8 hours of continual use.
Price is relatively reasonable (at less than $60) and great (at less than $50) compared to other bluetooth options.
CONS: As noted by other reviewers, it is not made to withstand impacts or rough handling, so I am careful when taking it off, plugging it into the charger and putting it on. So far mine has not been damaged, however, I can see how it could happen if it were not treated with care.
It sounds great and the range is awesome. I would hang my cell phone on a piece of equipment in the middle of the gym at eye level height, and I wouldn't have to worry about a dropped signal for my hour workout. The battery lasts for about 5 workouts that are 1 hour each. The range is really good. I would guess 150 feet or so. It answers calls nicely, integrates with my voice commands on the Android, and the ear pieces are comfortable.
The reason this broke is because the power switch stopped turning the device on. It broke somehow because when I slide the switch to 'on' it doesn't click, like there is something loose in the electronic switch. I was a little disappointed by that, but I got good use out of the device, so I can't complain too much. I might contact LG to see if they'll replace the device for me.
Anyway, I still recommend this!
