Some reviews and answers suggest this is not Mac-compatible; however, here's the skinny:
This unit is plug and play, meaning no setup is required. (Note: The software CD that comes with it is NOT necessary for use; it's just a free media suite.) The problem lies in the fact that, when a BLANK disc is inserted, the drive doesn't appear in Finder, which is no doubt confusing. (A disc with content will appear normally.)
One method to confirm it is recognized is to go to About This Mac > Storage.
To burn a file to a blank disc: Control-click your file and select Burn "your_file" to Disc — a popup box should give you the option to select the external drive.
NOTE: Samsung no longer supports external optical drives. No tech support, no warranty claims via manufacturer.
I took off a star just because when the tray opens for you to put in a disk or take it out, the tray does not come out far enough for the entire disk to be outside of the player. So you have to tilt the disk as you put it in and then snap it into place, while trying not to scratch the disk at all. It's not that hard to do, but it seems like it's an issue that could've been avoided pretty easily.
Why do I only give it 4 stars though? Because I'm on my 3rd external drive as the other ones eventually stop working or wear down for some reason. It seems to last less than a year, then I start having issues with this. While this runs closer to $30, it shouldn't be more than $20. It does the trick, but doesn't last long enough.
Ignoring that let's talk about the burner. Only needs the single USB slot, that is as long as your USB slot can supply enough power to it, which mine can. The portable devices with 2 USB, one being pig tailed off the other, are for the rare cases when that's needed for that device it doesn't mean you always need it. I do wish the USB cable was bit longer. It's only about 2 feet long. Mini-USB on the device end.
Moving on, it uses a tray instead of slot loaded. I've never really cared for slot load devices. The tray is just like what you would get a laptop where the disc snaps into the tray, understandable being as slim as it is. The burn times are on par with what my internal burner would do: 4.3GB in about 10mins, a bit more than 20mins if I add in the verify step which is a good idea most times.
Anyone looking to get this for the intent of using it as a DVD player for your TV; DON'T! That's not what it's meant for. It's meant to be used with a computer, not a TV. While yes I'm sure it'll work with some TVs that doesn't mean it'll work with all of them. If you want a mini DVD player for your TV then go looking for one that's designed for that. LG's website list this as "TV Connectivity" which is a bit misleading since it's just a USB device. I'm sure it works fine on most LG TVs, I can't get to the ports of my some old LG LCD TV to see if it works with it. It doesn't work on my Samsung but that's not the fault of the burner as much as it is the TV itself. My point is, don't knock any star(s) just because it doesn't work on your TV.
I would also like people to stop giving it a bad review because of "the installation CD" and "can't find drivers for it." There Are No Drivers For This Device! This is simply plug&play. The "installation CD" is for installing the, completely optional, Cyberlink free software. If you're having problems with getting this to work, it's not because it's missing drivers. Even since Windows95, I've never known an optical drive that required drivers for it to work, not including USB. If you're on a Mac or Linux or Windows XP and newer, then it's just plug&play.
Speaking of the Cyberlink software. I've seen people knocking off stars because of it. The Cyberlink software is offered for people that need that sort of thing. If you can't get the software to work for whatever reason, then go complain to them. It's LG's fault or the drives fault. Rate the product not the optional software.
