I program and host a number of multi-media-based websites. My web servers all have backup discs and regular backup procedures. Nevertheless, I’d come close to having good backups overwritten by newer defective files. For that reason I wanted some way of accumulating inexpensive backups akin to what we used to do with floppy discs tossed in a drawer.

I considered additional portable hard drives, but I know that magnetic media can be easily corrupted. I also know that the content of a USB flash drive eventually fades or deteriorates (I am an electrical engineer). DVDs would have been the answer if it weren’t for the fact that my websites are far larger than a single DVD can accommodate. And spreading content over multiple DVD’s requires planning and disc by disc supervision of the backup process. Instead I wanted to, in essence, just say “back it all up!” and walk away.

I knew that Blu-Ray Discs (“BD’s”) had higher capacity, and a little Googling revealed that they could store 25GB per layer, with two layer discs readily available (providing 50GB capacity for under $4 per disc), and with three layer (75GB) versions coming out (one boasting of a 1000 year BD data storage lifetime).

The one potential problem I saw was that I operate from Mac computers which are notoriously Blu-Ray unfriendly. And I did not want to have to search out, buy and install additional layers of software to get a Blu-Rays to burn.

This unit caught my eye based on reviewer’s claims that it did work with Apples and did so without additional software.

I have now confirmed that claim in considerable detail. I bought this unit (via my employer’s non-Amazon contract IT equipment supplier), along with a sample of 25GB/6X/Single layer BDs and 50GB/2x/double layer BDs.

I'm using this drive to make backup's of business-data files on a Mac and not to burn movies. This LG works effortlessly with Mac; it was recognized immediately by the Mac OS upon connecting the USB cable--which is SHORT (my only complaint). No software needed to burn data files to DVD, Blu-Ray, or M-Disks just drag and drop and click burn in the Finder; The burning is fast, I believe at 16x and 6x for DVD and Blu-Ray; verification takes a little while but has been successful every time. The burner I received was packed and surrounded in thick foam which protected the device in shipping. Tip: On the mac, turn off Time Machine and Use a battery backup for your computer AND this drive when burning disks. Info and Support from LG is here: [...] I really like the M-Disks: [...] .I can't speak to writing movies to DVD or Blu-Ray, but I'd expect, for the mac, you'd need some software to create the right format and finalize the disk, like Roxio Toast: [...] or DVD Fab or software like that: [...] If you need a driver for the PC, you might find it here: [...]

I liked the Blu-ray burner. It worked well with Mac & PC. However, my unit arrived with the serial number blacked out & "VOID" in large silver letters across the product name plate on the bottom of the unit. There was NO mention about the unit being refurbished. I plan to buy the same exact model again - But I will never buy anything from STORITE again

I just noticed that another reviewer wrote that he received a refurbished unit when he purchased a new one on this site. I had almost the exact same experience purchasing this from here in early December of 2013 (today is 2014Jan6), except that my experience was probably even worse than his. (My recommendation: do not buy this device from Amazon until they find a new partner for it.)

First, I ordered this unit -- supposedly new -- from Amazon, and it was shipped from a partner. They sent it to me in a few days, and when I opened the package it was pretty obvious that it was used; they hadn't even bothered to try to hide it as none of the Ziploc bags that the cables arrive in were even closed. Heck, the twist ties were just sitting at the bottom of the bags as well! Well, I plugged in this drive anyways, just to see if it might work with my computer.

Another reviewer said that he had trouble with this writer with Windows 8, and I might know why. I believe that I have one USB 2 port and one USB 3 port, on my Toshiba laptop. On my first attempt, I plugged this into the older port, and the drivers failed to install correctly. The second attempt succeeded with the newer port, and the drivers installed fine. (I have only run this test once, ad hoc, so I can't guarantee that this is correct. But this advice might be a good place to start if you have problems with Windows.)

Next, I flipped the drive upside down, and on the bottom the serial number had been blacked out with a felt tip pen and "VOID" had been written on it. Grrr. Now I knew that it was used, perhaps refurbished? I repackaged it, got an RMA, and sent it back with a nasty note saying, "I bought a new unit, and I danged well want a new unit!" and ordered another one.

Simply connected the USB cable to the iMac and plugged in the power cable , and it works flawlessly. Have used it with Lion and Mountain Lion.
The documentation from LG does not mention the Mac, but it burns and plays DVD and Blu-ray discs perfectly.
Allows you to watch Blu-rays on the iMac using VLC media player, available as a free download.
