Considering the price, this is basic external CD/DVD drive that works. For some who use external drive extensively, might want to consider higher end product that will endure wear & tear of the drive. Others who use infrequently (once in a while), this LG might fit the bill.

1. It is decently built. Made of plastic, while somewhat sturdy, still it will break if dropped. So handle with care.
2. It works with Windows 7, 8, & 8.1 out of the box. You do not need to install separate driver. Windows (7&8) will recognize the drive. So you can read & write CDs and DVDs. Read & Write speed is average among this price range.
3. You can play DVD as well, but EITHER you can install the software (CD) that came with it OR download & use VLC media player. Windows Media Player will not play DVD.
4. You do not need 2nd USB cord to power the drive. A provided single USB cable will connect and power up LG drive through your notebooks. It also works well with netbooks. I connected the LG drive to ASUS eee PC 1000HA (2gb RAM, Win 7, 128gb SSD), and it worked great!
5. Works with Linux as well. I dual-boot eee PC 1000HA with Win 7 and Xubuntu 14.10, and Xubuntu 14.10 recognized the drive and played the DVD in VLC media player.
6. You can also connect the drive to your TV - provided that your TV has USB port. So you can play your DVD and watch it on your TV.
7. You can read/write M-Discs. This is a great advantage of this drive. M-Discs can store your files (docs, pictures, & movies) for 1000 years. Yes. 1000 years.
8. The box comes with DVD drive, manual, 1 USB cable, and Software CD (to play DVDs, install drivers, etc). But I did not need the software CD for my purpose. But it is good to have it handy, just in case.

This was the cheapest DVD+DL burner i could find from a brand that I trust. There were no reviews at all, but I thought that this brand couldn't be that big of a risk. So far it has worked wonderfully burning dual layer DVD's (dvd movie rips), all of which play on my el cheapo dvd player that I got at wal-mart 4-5 years ago. I am using a macbook (2008) running 10.6.8, no compatibility problems at all. As usual with Macs, no driver needed. iDVD and MDRP work seamlessly.

Pros:
-low price
-decent brand
-easy to use
-did not require the use of the second USB power plug (although I use it anyway)
-very small/portable
-so far, no errors in burning
- Mac OS compatible, no drivers needed
- Uses the same USB mini-B cord that many portable devices require.

Con:
-seems to have minor issues reading DVD+DL discs that it burned itself
-doesn't feel super sturdy

For those of you who are fairly practical and just want an affordable option for DVD+DL drives, this is something to consider.

I had purchased this dvd writer for reading CD's, transferring music and playing dvd's. Its my first day using it and its working amazingly well! I had previously purchased a more expensive model last year and it never even read the cd to upload it to my netbook. This product however works very well and was easy to set up! just plug in two USB connectors into your netbook/laptop and it works! no software needed to install unless you are wanting to burn dvds.
i would highly recommend this product!
its also a great size and easily portable if you work on the go!

This is an easy to use replacement for the defective burner on my Mac. Since it's powered via the usb cord it doesn't require a bulky power supply and subsequently less space. It's also compatible with my little Dell laptop. You can use it with confidence.

Let's get this out in the open right from the start: I am technologically-challenged. The last one of these I bought (Samsung, about a year ago) was used for a total of maybe 10 hours but it went belly up when I tried to use it recently (strange endless whirring and clunking) so ordered another. The last one was truly plug and play. This one has been more work. I loaded the software that came with it but neither the Windows Media Player nor the Toshiba Media Player on my laptop will make it work. Downloaded the beautiful, FREE silver bullet called VLC and everything sprang to life. While trying to trouble shoot this one, I locally purchased (for at least twice Amazon's price) a Memorex external DVD player, but I just needed to see if it was the LG player/Toshiba laptop or... as usual... me. Have decided to keep both of them so now I have one for the office and one for home/travel since the miracle that is VLC made both of them work flawlessly. The reason for talking about the Memorex at all is that it is substantially less noisy than this one. I'm aware of the LG playing a movie, for example; the same movie on the Memorex is nearly silent. For that I am giving the LG three stars and, if I could, five for the Memorex and at least 18,756 stars to VLC. Maybe more.

This unit wouldn't recognize two separate brands of DVD-R discs when I tried to burn an iso file. I got a third brand to work, but the unit lost power after about 2 seconds of writing. The drive came with a single mini usb cable, not the dual cable others have reported for extra power.
