UPDATE: 10/01/17. The fan on one of the two units that I purchased died a few days ago. The compressor kicks in but the fan does not work. I have called LG and they gave me two phone numbers to call to schedule a repair. I called both numbers numerous times, and at both repair facilities that I called,it said :"Mailbox is Full" I have now changed my review from 3 stars to 2 stars pending the outcome of LG's warranty service. I will report back here to let everyone know the outcome of their warranty service,.
UPDATE 10/22 Spoke with LG a few times since my last update. They had me call a repair place that told me they no longer repair air conditioners,.
Gave me ANOTHER and had me fax them the invoice and they said they don't service AC's purchased on Amazon
Then, another week went by and NOTHING. I called and asked for a supervisor. The woman was nasty as can be. Wouldn't let me talk. I then asked for another supervisor, was on hold, then connected. THIS supervisor wouldn't say a word. I asked him why he wasn't responding, he said that since the other supervisor wouldn't let me talk, he's going to let me talk all I want without interrupting. (Obviously just being mean)
I never heard from them, so I called a few days later, they said that my case was closed. SO, NO WARRANTY SERVICE ! ! !
Now will have to go to small claims court to sue LG. Will NEVER buy another LG product.
This air conditioner is rated number 1 in Consumer Reports in this size range. This is a 12,000 BTU unit that is rated GREAT for brownouts (when your electric company lowers the juice when you're' having a heat wave which is when you need it most). If an AC is not great in brownouts, when you need it most, the compressor won't kick in or will not work at full capacity. That is why I look for brownout performance as my first criteria.
The unit cools FAST and COLD.
The unit is QUIET.
The unit is ENERGY EFFICIENT with a EER of 12.1 which is CRAZY efficient. The GE Energy Star I just threw out after 9 years had an EER of 10.8 and I loved how efficient it was. This is even better!
Now for the not so good:
If you aren't handy and aren't patient enough to read the instructions carefully, don't buy this unit. The instructions are tiny, but you can find them in PDF format on LG's website and enlarge them. I suggest you do that.
HINTS: When attaching the front cover, make sure you remove the filter beforehand and then put the two screws that come with the unit into the holes to affix the front cover to the unit. You have to do this with the filter REMOVED.
HINT: There are two black plastic control arms that stick out of the front of the unit to direct the airflow left or right. If you remove the filter for cleaning WITHOUT pushing these two black control arms out of the way, you ARE going to rip the filter with the control arms. VERY BAD DESIGN.
HINT: Before putting the front cover on, there is a lever inside the unit to open and close the fresh air vent. It folds in. Make sure you unfold it and then let it protrude past the front cover when you put the front cover on or you won't be able to open and close the vent. I personally left it folded, inside the unit in the closed position as the vent is about a 1 inch flap that basically doesn't do a thing. When you want fresh air, just open the window for awhile. The vent is useless. ALSO, if you do unfold it and let it stick out of the front vents, it is yet ANOTHER item to worry about that will rip the filter when you lift it up and out.
PACKAGING. I bought two of these units within a week of each other. This has a shipping weight of about 95 pounds, and the packaging should have been better. Both units came with the boxes bashed up. Can't blame UPS for this. The box and styrophome should be better from the LG factory. There were a few bends in the sheet metal of the unit that weren't too difficult to straighten out and aligh, but still, better packaging was needed. I can see how this unit can be easily damaged in shipping,
REMOTE CONTROL. I installed this air conditioner in the exact same location as my old GE air conditioner. I used to just point the GE remote in the general direction of the AC and it worked flawlessly. With the new LF remote, I have to sit up in bed and point it DIRECTLY at the unit for it to work. VERY narrow angle for the remote to work. I wouldn't have bought it if I knew this sooner. This is an issue for me and it pisses me off.
SO, the unit is quiet, very energy efficient, very cold, great in brownouts and if you are HANDY, you will love this unit. If you are NOT handy, buy a different unit.
DO BE CAREFUL REMOVING THE FILTER by pushing those two black control arms OUT OF THE WAY or you will rip the filter.
Three stars. One off for the packaging, bad instructions etc and another star off for the BAD design of the control arms that will rip the filter if you forget to move them AND the NARROW angle of the remote control.
I bought two. They're working fine. If they last as long as my old GE (nine years) I will be very happy.
just had several days of 90+ temps, and this AC kept us nice and cool
Package arrived in excellent condition.
Installation consisted of removing the the AC internals from the chassis, attaching the panels and mounting the chassis to the window.
It was difficult getting the chassis mounted to the type of window I have but I would expect the same trouble with any AC with this type of window.
The sill supports are barley on the trim of the sill on the outside and the trim is visibly being indented. It is stable but I may need to figure out a better way to support it. The panel guides are very fragile/flimsy and is the reason I am taking a star off. If the panel guides were built in to the chassis this would be a 5 star review.
As for what matters, the AC is working beautifully. The noise level is very low and it pumps out plenty of cold air. I am cooling my entire downstairs with this unit and it dropped our temperature 15 degrees within 30 minutes. I am very pleased with this purchase.
Best 12000 btu unit I have bought so far. (Currently using 3 of various types after the main house AC died.)
Temperature sensor seems right on and the unit kicks on when the temperature only gets a little below what you set it to. This helps keep the rooms at a stable temperature instead of swinging back and forth between hot and cold.
VERY quiet. Fan noise is considerably lower than other models.
Drain hose option. All units these days purposely retain their condensation (water) to be flung by the fan onto the hot coils to improve efficiency but this time of year there is too much. You can hook up a drain hose to control where the water goes.
Cons: The reason I say 4 1/2 stars.
Install is a little funky. You actually have to take the unit out of the shell to get it assembled. You can't just hang it in the window and go. Instructions are hard to read (very small print) and not very obvious at times.
By far my favorite unit I have bought so far.
Also, very strong cooling capacity.
These strength more than compensate for the flimsy packaging (LG - note - your packaging was clearly not designed for the e-commerce age - unit arrived intact but box didn't survive the journey and arrived open, some of the documentation fell out, tho luckily the A/C itself was not damaged).
Amazon customer service was, as always, great and very responsive (we were worried about the open box).
Overall very happy with the purchase.
