What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.
Design, performance, and power — all in one just-right phone. Nexus 5X is an unlocked phone and works on major carrier networks.
Top Customer Reviews
I can let this go as a fluke since I had several months of a working unit, as long as I get a working replacement. Called Google and answered their questions, which in turn put me on a 3-way call with LG customer support. Answered all their questions, gave the IMEI number on the phone, everything checked out for a replacement upon me sending them a copy of the purchase receipt. Simply made a PDF of this item's Amazon purchase invoice and received a call from an LG rep in the Philippines the next day saying they cannot honor the warranty since "this phone was bought unlocked." I proceeded to explain to them ALL Nexus devices are unlocked, even if you purchase them from the carrier. She just kept repeating the same line over & over & over again that they cannot honor warranties on unlocked Nexus phones.
This definitely sours my entire experience with the Google brand, and especially with LG. It also tells me to NEVER buy a phone from Amazon, even if it says "(U.S. Warranty)" in the title.
-First off the Nexus 5X runs Marshmallow (6.0)- the newest android OS with effortless fluidity and precision.
-The 12.3 megapixel camera (no, megapixels are not the only thing you judge a camera by) is the best camera on any phone (yes that includes any current iPhone), besides the Galaxy S6 and Note5. It is particularly impressive in low-light settings with its larger 1.55 µm pixels.
-The fingerprint sensor on the back is not only innovative, but completely practical and insanely fast, as well as being totally glitch proof. It works every time. It also provides just a cool sense of security in your hand- you have a point of reference for your finger in the back.
-The 5.2 inch full HD display is perfect. Just the right size to use in one hand and still appreciate the beautiful HD experience.
-Since it is a Google-made phone, you get any and all updates automatically and right away.
-The phone will charges from dead 0 to 100% in half an hour.
-The fully universal and reversible C-port charging cable puts Apple's "lighting charger" to absolute shame, and will soon take over the market.
-The body of the phone is polycarbonate (but not cheap-feeling) material instead of metal, making it more flexible and less likely to break if dropped.
-Google Now - The new Google search system built into the home button is incredibly useful. It also lets you activate a voice search with the words "Ok Google", even when you phone is off.
-Double-tapping the power button will bring up the camera speedily.
-Last but of course not least: the sub-400$ price-tag.
-Oh, and the jade "Ice" color is really cool in my opinion.
-The C-port charging cable is not USB compatible without a converter- so you can't charge it from most computers. This problem is simply fixed by just remembering to carry around your charger. C-port capability is also a thing of the future. It's only a matter of time before it completely takes over the place of the bulky and frustrating USB ports.
-The non-poshness of "plastic" body. Apple enthusiasts users will make a big deal about this, even while they walk around with their shattered, BUT METAL iPhones.
-No wireless charging capabilities. Would this be nice? Sure. But I'm not complaining when I can charge my phone in less than 30 minutes.
Only real con:
-2 GB of RAM. This is a small amount, and with no up-gradable options this is true negative and frustrating aspect. Yet if you get the 32 GB version (which I would recommend, the price jump isn't too much), you probably wont be too bothered by this unless you're an app-crazed and download fanatic.
Google produced a killer new phone of the future with the fingerprint sensor, high-quality camera, and C-port charging features. The best part: It's a fraction of the price of expensive flagships like the iPhone 6 (Plus), or the Galaxy S6 or Note5. You wont regret picking up a sleek new Google Nexus 5X.
And the fingerprint scanner... my god the fingerprint scanner! At first I thought putting it on the back of the device was a dumb idea. Then I held the phone in my hand and guess where my index finger naturally wanted to fall? Right on the fingerprint scanner. Brilliance. If you're not a technology enthusiast like me, you might wonder why this is so cool, but trust me, you NEED this in your life! The convenience it adds is just awesome. Configure your fingerprint(s) and just tap the scanner to both unlock and turn the screen on. You don't even need to hit the power button first! Scanning time is very quick too (~0.5 sec) and accurate. The fingerprint data is encrypted and stored only on the device, so it can't be stolen from a remote server. You can configure as many fingers as you want (and label them so you know which ones they are) and even configure other people's fingers! Want your wife to be able to unlock your phone too? Just add her finger!
I highly recommend the "Nexus 5X Case, Ringke SLIM" case. Just use those search terms and you'll find it. Very sexy case that doesn't add much bulk and looks great.
