LG Super Multi Blue Slim Portable with 3D Blu-ray Disc Playback and M-DISC Support BP40NS20

I have an LG Desktop BD-RW drive and I wanted a portable BD-RW drive that I could carry around when I travel, and use with my Macbook Air. This fit the bill perfectly - the only thing I had to provide was a USB extension cable. The BP40NS20 requires connection to two USB ports. On the MBA the two USB ports are on opposite sides of the machine and the provided cable wouldn't reach.

So far reading and writing CDs/DVDs/BluRays without a hitch (I use Roxio Toast for burning).

Just received the LG Super Multi-Blue Slim drive almost a week now. The product is beautifully designed and BEST of all -- it works with my new Retina Mac Book Pro using the main USB cable -- be careful because the 2ndary pig-tail cable is only for power and your drive will not be recognized by your MAC -- use the main cable and the drive will have full power (no 2nd cable needed) and be recognized. I'm running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1. I've used the drive to copy files from CD ROMs, watched a full Justice League DVD movie, install Adobe Light Room 4 and Parallels desktop 7 all in the short time I've had this wonderful drive. It all worked flawlessly and again -- only using one cable. Highly recommend -- its slim, portable and stylish -- haven't tried any Blu Rays yet but that's next on the list. Man this Retina display makes text look simply AWESOME -- get you some Retina loving & you will never go back!!!!

I've used this drive with both PC and Mac computers for over a month now with no issues. Installation is a snap in all cases and the speed has met my expectations. Great product for the price.

Update: The drive stopped working. It loads a DVD when you first plug it in; but then is fails after about five minutes of use. There is absolutely zero support for this device on LG's website. You can't even select the product to request service. Given that - I can't recommend this product at all. Of course, I can't return it now so I'm just stuck with it.

At the time I ordered this, it was rated around 4.5 stars with 30 reviews so I ordered it thinking it would work great. There were even reviews describing how well the drive works on both Mac and PC.

Blu ray discs won't just play on a PC or Mac, you have to have a software bluray dvd player installed (Windows Media Player won't play them, for example). Without the software that comes with the drive it's useless as a blu ray player. I could not get the software to install on my Windows 7 x64 system, no matter what I tried. It kept saying "This Software can only be installed with a LG(HLDS) device. The setup will Abort" (sic). I'm a software engineer so I work with software and computers all the time, and I tried everything I could think of to get the software to install. I had daemon tools installed (a virtual dvd drive software), so I uninstalled it and rebooted. Same issue. I had another external dvd drive hooked up to my computer so I unhooked it and rebooted. Same issue. No problem, I thought, I'll just go to the LG site and see what their support pages say because surely someone else has run into this problem right? Well, LG doesn't list this device on their website. I had to google search the device to finally find the product page, and when I clicked on the 'Product Support' link it took me to LG.com's home page. When I tried manually navigating through their support pages to try to find the device, it wasn't listed in any of their device lists.

I would look elsewhere for a Blu ray drive.

I bought this for my son for Christmas. I read reviews to see if people were using it with a MacBook. There were several who were and said it worked. Well, I will testify to the fact that it works wonderfully with a MacBook Pro, and my son LOVES it!!!

Just burned my first Blu-ray with this; worked first time, and was somewhat easier than expected (although using a Mac, I should've known it was going to be that easy). My intention is to use this for finally doing some conversion and long-term archiving of old video projects (going back to ~2000, before I owned a DVD burning drive).

My hardware setup is a Mac mini (server variant; quad core i7) with the required USB-EHCI ports; I only used 1 of the 2 connectors on the Y-cable. On the software side of the equation, I didn't need to install any additional "drivers" (neither did it come with any for Mac; came with a Windows disc that I haven't looked at). For video production, I have Final Cut Studio 3 with Compressor 3.5 (a bit behind the times, but it works) on Mac OS X 10.8.3. From Final Cut Pro, I used the "Send to Compressor" option. Within Compressor, the drive just showed up on the list of available destinations/targets. I selected the settings for Blu-ray (Blu-ray H.264 for video and Dolby Professional for audio - don't forget to add audio settings or you won't get any!), and told it to "create Blu-ray disc" on job completion.

My first Blu-ray disc was a ~2.5 minute test clip, which seemed to take ~10x running time to complete, including both compression and burning (most of which seemed to be burning; not yet sure if that's typical for Blu-ray - maybe I *do* need to connect the other tail of the USB Y-cable for power/performance?). When complete, the software automatically ejected the disc. I checked it on my PS3 (the only Blu-ray player I own), and it played just fine. The menu templates in Compressor 3.5 are a bit simple and can't be extensively modified (i.e.
