I bought this product on sale at a local Fry's for 29.99. Even with the wireless router in the same room with the product with no security I could not get a wireless connection. A software "upgrade" that could not be declined nor reverted removed the Amazon video app -- my primary reason for purchasing the device. Were it not for the 40 mile roundtrip and 15% restocking fee I would be returning this device.

I tried to submit a review on the lg website more than one week ago and lg apparently has declined to publish as there are still 0 reviews of the product over there.

Like most people here, I bought this at Fry's for $29.99, cheapest streaming, media player device you could find anywhere. First of all, for those that gave this one star, it's not fair for LG. No device is perfect and so is this one, it can't satisfy all of our needs. I have to agree that one major flaw is that the wifi reception of this device sucks and it doesn't remember my password setting! Quite a few times, when I turned it on, I had to reenter the password. Now are the good parts: the remote control feel nice the your hand, not too small, not too big, ergonomic and has just enough buttons. And so is the content apps, it has Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, CinemaNow, Pandora, YouTube (YES, YouTube is still there), even Google Map! Amazon is on the cover of the box but I don't know why it's not there any more :( The menu, user interface is clean, especially with Netflix, it's just exactly like on Roku (and yes, it does have closed captioning feature, unlike most of the streaming devices out there, for those of you that wonder) The other good part is that it is DLNA certified (well, if the wifi doesn't work, what's the point, right?) and it has USB port that can play pretty much the most popular media format you can throw at: avi, mp4, wmv, mkv.... with subtitles supported. What I was looking for is the device that has the clean Netflix interface AND has USB port so I can hook up and play media from my external hard drive (Roku has tons of content but I only care about Netflix and a few more, the top of the line model has USB but it can only play a very few media formats) If they fix the wifi issue via firmware update, this would be one of the best media streaming device!

I went to my local Fry's intending to buy a Roku XS. I really only wanted a way to stream Netflix since my Blu-Ray and TV aren't networkable. I happened to see this little guy for $29.99. I figured for that price I couldn't really go wrong.

So I took it home and used the automated method to connect to my wireless router. No problem at all. After entering my Netflix login info I was able to browse my (streaming) queue and select a movie. I've watched several movies with no issues and perfectly acceptable video quality. By the way, I have not had any wi-fi issues that others have mentioned...it connects to my network each time I turn it on.

The device can also connect to Vudu and Hulu plus. However, I have not used those features and probably won't. Youtube works great but it's a pain to search with the non-alphanumeric remote. There are some other premium channels available but not a lot. There is no web browser or way to add or delete things from the premium menu (boo).

I haven't used any of the other features like "smart share" or anything, either. I bought it for Netflix, it does that fine, and I'm satisfied, for the price I paid. If you have to pay more than $30, or want other features, I would look elsewhere.

UPDATE: 7/15/2013 I decided to replace this with the new Roku 3 just because it's so darn slow to start up, load the interface, and connect to Netflix. It worked fine but it gets a little old waiting so long for it to load everything.

I called LG two days ago and they stated that with this box I could watch Amazon Instant Videos On my TV.
I ordered it two days got it here today Oct 10. Imagine my surprise when I hooked it up and the Amazon App for Amazon Instant Videos is not on this with the other ones. I contacted LG customer service again and after a long hold, the rep comes back on the line and states that Amazon didn't renew there contract with LG so the app is no longer available to be viewed through this item. I was upset to say the least as even when I went to there website where they had directed me to find the item. There was a button that said you can purchase this from Amazon! On this product page it also had the logo's for the apps that come on it and Amazon Instant video was listed with the picture in product descriptions. That was two days ago. Now I come back to this Product page and it just has basic info about the item and no listing now about what apps come on it. So total waste of money for the Amazon Instant video. It makes me wonder then If this LG up grader doesn't have the apps does the LG TV, and if they still do why wouldn't the contract be for all LG products, TV's, Blueray Players, and this Upgrader box! FYI would have gave it zero stars but wont let you go further unless you chose at least one star.

WiFi connection is actually not as bad as other reviewers mentioned. I installed it in the room with poor wifi connection and was able successfully connect to my 8 year old D-link router. Searched for free services and it worked just as I expected. It does take some time to start playing from selecting an episode. But it is not too bad. I think it is more of an issue on the provider's side. Like HULU - it does take time from switching from commercial to and from. Once it starts playing - it just plays. And this is with fairly poor wifi quality.

It seems to play files fine from external USB hard-drive. I tried it with MKV files - picture is stunning. The only issue I have with it - it would not play VOB files (from DVDs stored on the hard-drive). I have USB powered 1TB disc - it powers it fine. No issues here.

Overall seems like solid unit.
