Top customer reviews
The ONLY TWO CAVEATS I am noticing are that:
(1) while the unit is turned on, I can't go on my computer and log into Netflix (I get a thing saying: "We're currently experiencing a technical issue. While we get things back to normal, some features aren't available - but you can play select titles on this page." --If I turn the unit off, I can add stuff to my queue on my computer (faster than using the remote).
(2) The remote operates sort of like the mousepad on a laptop but is much slower and clunkier to use. I solved that problem by plugging a wireless mouse into the USB port on the Upgrader and I can navigate a lot faster on Google, Netflix and Youtube that way.
I just got the unit this afternoon, and I haven't explored Hulu and Pandora and the other goodies available. I expect no problems, though, based on the ease of use with the others I mentioned. Overall, I'm super happy I ordered this and I think it's one of the best things to be invented since the Internet itself. :)
UPDATE 03/24/2013: Been using this for a while now with ZERO problems. I cannot wait to get this for my tech-UNsavvy mother, knowing this will be a breeze for her to set up and use without me there (she lives several states away, but I know what her setup is like and if she has ANY questions I can help her in split seconds). HIGHLY RECOMMEND this item and I am SO glad I purchased it!
ONE QUESTION FOR ANYONE WHO MAY KNOW: I have this unit wired in my living room. If I purchase another unit for my bedroom, will I be able to set it up wirelessly without conflict?
Initially I pick up this device just recently because LG refuses to upgrade my old LG 42LE5400 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV with Internet Applications with any additional apps so I am stuck with an empty "Coming Soon" tab on my netcast. Decided to use it in my guest room on an older non app LG TV LG 37LK450 37-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV. I am extremely satisfied with its performance and features. Setup is flawless and after reading some of the reviews I can safely say that it now contains Hulu plus, Amazon, Netflix, a web browser and many other apps are available including a few of he same ones that I have never used on my 42LE5400.
The rooms in my townhouse are hardwired for internet service so I'm not sure how well this device will work with your wireless network. I pick this up at a great price and now seriously mad at myself that I did not order a second one. I like that it has the ability to stream audio and video from other devices on my network and I can play mp3, mv4, avi, mkv files, and photos from my computer. It also has a built in USB port so it will play files from a portable hard drive or a thumb drive.
If your like me you have a small list of websites that you visit daily and the web browser is a nice feature once you annoyingly add your favorite daily websites by annoyingly typing on the little remote control. Overall video and sound quality are great with 1080p and Dolby Digital output.
Another reason I dropped it one star is because there is not way to secure this device on any TV set and like most remote controls the device has to bee seen. I decided to used Velcro and mounted it underneath and in the middle where the stand would normally go since the TV is wall mounted.
When I received my Smart TV Upgrader, and I immediately had to upgrade the software. If, when you upgrade your software, you receive the "Upgrade Fail" message, just know that repeating the exercise several times will eventually yield success.
This product boasts having many apps, but most of them are obscure Korean-specific apps. The mainstream apps for this devise are nice starts, but don't expect Apple or Droid-quality apps.
Whoever designed the YouTube app should step away from the computer. When you load this app, it immediately plays the first video. I can't tell if this is the latest video uploaded or the first video in the alphabet, but the video that immediately plays for me is in an eastern European language, and it's inappropriate for children. There's no getting around this. When you access YouTube, it doesn't display a menu, like my LG DVD player, it just immediately begins playing whatever the first video is.
Very important: If your wireless network is secured by filtering device MAC addresses and if you want to connect this device wirelessly, don't buy it. The MAC address is not readily available. An Internet search and a search on one of the many LG Web sites will not help.
The LG Remote app is OK, and it is much better than the inadequate remote that comes with the product.
