So, my SuperDrive DL DVD burner drive on my 2006 MacBook finally died. Rather than waste the (time or) money to replace or repair it, I decided to go with an external. This one seemed to be pretty popular among the Mac crowd and it was pretty cheap. Had all the features I wanted, DL DVD burning, external power (USB powered gives you flaky burns), LightScribe, and a good solid enclosure. So far, I've burned a few LightScribe CD's, looks wonderful. I've burned a few DVD's but due to crappy media (see my other reviews), no LightScribe on those. This thing is quite, fast and looks pretty after you peel off the protective film. The software disk that comes with this is just Windows, so Mac users, go find the LaCie LightScribe [Free] software on MacUpdate, and you'll be good to go burning those LightScribe labels. Unless you have Toast Titanium, which has LightScribe printing capabilities built in.

Protip: To activate Enhanced Contrast LightScribe printing on Mac

1) Have your Administrator password ready since the script will access system files.

2) Make sure "LightScribe System Software" version 1.8.15.1 or newer is installed. The script and supporting content are installed with the enabled LSS.

3) Bring up a terminal window. Applications/Utilities/Terminal (or type Terminal on Spotlight)

4) Type the following onto the command line

sudo /usr/lib/lightscribe/elcu.sh

**Note the space after "sudo", and no spaces for the rest of the string.**

5) Enter your password when prompted.

6) Choose to activate the higher contrast print setting by typing in "1" (without the quotes).

Outstanding product. I do professional videography and really like the LG External DVD Rewriter. I am albe to use this to have professional looking pictures and labels that are done by laser on the DVDs. This is a very nice touch as my packages include 10 free copies of the DVD. Great for weddings and other special events. Sam Gold - owner Sam Gold Video [...]

As a Linux user, I have to burn my own operating system discs, and I do it often. With my old HP laptop, I had a Lightscribe drive built in, so I figured I might as well make use of it. Let me tell you, those Lightscribe labels look *great*. Instead of a handwritten line of text or two, I can burn the official CD label art onto the discs. Sure, the label is only grayscale, and a chunk of the label is missing at the hub (there's some Lightscribe data at the center that can't be labeled), but there is still no comparison to the old Sharpie method.

Well, I got a Dell recently through my university, and when my HP stayed at home, so did my Lightscribe. So the main reason I bought this is for Lightscribe, but I figured, while I'm at it, I might as well get a fast drive, too.

This drive has Lightscribe, so it met that requirement. There is one annoyance, though. With maybe every other disc I put in to label, the drive starts to malfunction, and my computer complains about not being able to communicate with the drive. When it happens, this problem goes away if I just take out the disc, wipe the silver ring on top where the Lightscribe data is, and put it back. Note that this isn't defective discs or smudges, either. I'm using what's left of the same pack of CD's I used with my HP, and I never had this problem with that computer. And I've been very careful not to touch the surface of the disc. I only bumped off one star for this, because the problem is easy to fix and the drive is great otherwise, but it's still kind of annoying since this is what I bought it for.

As far as the quality when the label is done printing, it looks just as great as with my HP.

This replaced an older LG burner, and has higher speeds for half the price of the older unit. It lasted for many years and burned thousands of DVDs and CDs and was more than twice as fast as the internal burner on my iMac. Unlike the older unit, this one properly burns double layer DVDs. It's a little noisy, but is quieter than the old unit even at higher speeds. Playing CDs is whisper quiet.

It even burns some DVDs marked as 16X at 24X, and all have burned without incident and played back flawlessly. I have not tried it with a LightScribe disk yet.

The one lack is that it has no Mac software for burning included with it, and SecurDisk seems to be a Windows-only component of Nero 11 software. I've had no problems burning on my iMac with either Toast or OS X disk burning.

This unit has performed extremely well and is a solid buy.

I am extremely pleased with this unit and the ease with which it installed on both my computers (one with Vista Business and a second with XP Professional). Both computers recognized the unit and I was able to burn DVD's and CD's within minutes. While I have not burned a large volume of media so far, I have had no burning failures or other problems with the unit. The Unit itself looks and feels very substantial and you don't feel as though you have to worry about the case breaking with reasonable normal use. The tray of the unit accepts both normal sized media I use and pocket CD's that my Mavica Camera takes pictures with. All in all the unit is a great performer at a good price.

The software that came with the unit is exceptional as well in my opinion. It installed without a hitch and came with a variety of programs that were both easy to use and quite useful. So far I have not had the opportunity to use the Light Scribe feature so I can't really comment on that yet. I would definitely recommend this even though it is slightly more expensive than other LX models.
