I have had and used just about every variety and type. I have used the ones that wrap over the ear with a mouth extension like the office Plantronics wireless headset. I have tried the Plantronics BackBeat. Also, ones by Motorola, Jawbone, Sony, Avantree, Jabra, Jaybird, and probably some that I can’t remember.
So, I saw someone using these who convinced me to try them. As they say, the rest is history. I have never turned back to the other types. These are now my headphones of choice.
And, they are not perfect. I have used the LG 900, the LG tone active, the tone active +, and the LG 920, (the Costco brand 900 but at a huge discount).
For working out, the Tone active is great. I sweat, and I watch/stream Netflix to take my mind off the workout. And, my sweat goes into my ears and kills earbuds. So, the Tone Active is somewhat sweatproof and doesn’t die from the sweat. I have killed two sets of Jaybirds with sweat. The Freedom, which used to be advertised as sweatproof, and one X2.
The Tone Active is great, and the tone Active Plus is now my favorite for workouts.
Ok, back to my review for this headset. The Tone Active + is nice because it has both earbuds and speakers. But, it is a little bulky. And, I saw the 1100 platinum on a sudden price drop and pulled the plug.
These are great. Low profile and great sound. An easy connection and great Bluetooth range. When using for TV streaming, the blue tooth latency is minimal. The sound regarding treble and bass can be slightly adjusted, (neutral, treble, bass boost options), and they get plenty loud.
I find the earbud covers easy to use. They fit my ears and stay put. As I noted, I use other varieties of the same brand for jogging, running workouts, and they stay in. They don’t block so much sound that I can’t hear other things going on. But they are effective for isolation.
I really like the “collar style”. The silver blends nicely and doesn’t stand out if wearing a white dress shirt. And the black goes with everything. The retractable buds make it so there are not silly dangling things on your shirt. The button allows for easy retraction and they pull out easily.
Volume control, bass boost, and playback controls are a little confusing and take a bit to learn. But, after a bit, it becomes easy to use. It does interface with my Android phone. It allows for call recognition and contact search.
Charging is with a standard micro USB. Unlike Jaybird Freedom which needs a special charging system, these work with every micro USB charge you own. They seem to stay charged for up to 6-8 hours of use and hold the charge for days.
Sound to the callers is OK. These types of devices that use a pickup microphone that is not directly in front of the mouth are prone to extraneous noises and hollow sounding voices. These seem to be better than most. No one has ever complained and most say it sounds like a typical speaker phone. Not great, but more than acceptable.
Final summary, great sound, great blue tooth, easy connection, light weight, good looking, not geeky and easy to use. They are not waterproof. So, don’t use them for working out. I have trashed many earbuds with sweat. Get the Active + for that chore.
I also like the stereo quality and the ability to have one bud in, and one out, (retracted in the headset), for talking and hearing surround sounds.
One rant, LG return warranty uses FEDEX. If you ever send anything back to LG, be aware the send it back with FEDEX signature direct. That means you must sign for it. No indirect signature, no re- routing, no other person can sign. If you use your home address, and work for a living, there is a chance you may never get the item as FEDEX will not allow you to re-route it to another facility or FEDEX location for pickup.
If you send LG a return under warranty, which I have done, use an address you’ll be at for delivery signature.
But, if you’re looking for a set of blue tooth headset/headphones, give these a try.
Weird shaped earbuds - I always buy the comply comfort tips which transforms the listening experience.
These tips are elongated, not as comfortable.
They are EXTREMELY delicate. The little piece in the center of the shaft came apart for no reason. There's a little plastic tab that is part of a connective piece which connects the two parts. That little tab broke.
UPDATE: 9-25-17-- Mailed unit at my expense for repair on a Monday and got what appears to be a totally new unit via FedEx on Saturday at no additional cost. Upping rating by one star to three stars due to excellent customer service by LG.
Fortunately, amazon technical support agreed to give me full refund and I will seek for different device.
They are very solid around your neck, good sound quality, microphone is great, Bluetooth connection as well.
The thing is that the quality of these headsets is very poor.
I had my first one, and after about 8/9 months the microphone stopped working - or at least the other side had a very hard time understanding what I was saying. Sounded like the connection kept dropping, my voice was muffled. First one I didn't order through Amazon, lost receipt, so figured probably bad luck. This time let's order through Amazon since they're amazing with their return policy.
2nd one after about 6 months of average use the top connection where the rubber connects to the plastic started to crack open. I guess it bend too many times and got tired. My skin kept being pinched, so I decided to contact Amazon. Unfortunately this was purchased through a 3rd party seller who was not willing to help, but suggested to contact LG since it was still within the 1 year warranty.
I contacted LG, the chat took more than 1 hour, just to find out that physical damage is not part of the warranty, despite the fact that I did not cause this damage, so they weren't willing to help either.
This is obviously a design flaw, I didn't abuse the headset, just opened it a little to put it around my neck (which is not a massive one) and it still broke. If it was a $30 headset, and there are plenty out there, I could get it. But these headsets are $150, you would think it came with some kind of level of quality and warranty.
After this experience, no more LG purchases for me.
