I bought this from another online retailer back on 7/9/2011 (for $12 less I might add). In short, it exceeded every expectation I had for it. It is the fastest reader I have (and I own 6, including Plextor, LiteOn, etc). It will read discs perfectly that other readers just give error after error trying to read. As a burner, it is certainly at the top of the speed list as well. Just one caveat: This is a great DVD & Blu-Ray READER but will ONLY BURN DVD's (not Blu-Ray's)!

I was under the impression this bulk drive would not include the player s/w but it did! It's definintely faster than my other 1 year dvd drive when I did the windows 7 install twice using the new and old drives.

I has a groove design to the front panel, slightly glossy finish. Different from the regular ones with matt finish and flat surface.

This drive has AACS, an added level of copy protection that makes it inconvenient, unusable in some configurations where it can't get a digital handshake.

The copy software makers have already broken this encryption, so it doesn't stop them from making illegal copies, but it might stop you from being able to play DVD's.

Likely the people who say it doesn't play DVD's are trying to play through VGA or some other analog format or have an older video card that has compatibility issues.

If you are planning on using this drive to "rip" BDs then be prepared to have to reflash the firmware with a custom BIN to turn off the RipLock on the drive. Before I was getting 2.4x rips and now I get 8x+. So far it has been reliable at reading all of my BD discs I have thrown at it. Even a couple that gives my Asus drive fits.

I just received this and it works fine. Nice, quiet.

Make sure you read all the specs. If you're hoping for 12x reads on BD-ROM (commercial Blu-ray discs) like many of the other BD readers, you will be disappointed to discover that it only does 8x-10x (8x on dual layer) on those.

I haven't tried it as a DVD-writer since I will not be using it for that purpose.

It will make a very good backup for my older 12x (real) Samsung SH-B123L which, while faster, can sometimes struggle on scratched discs. I have one BD that my Samsung consistently fails on about 20% in. This LG reads the entire disc without a hiccup. The LG is a definite keeper!

I'm a computer technician and I've had to deal with a plethora of issues concerning computer based blu-ray set-ups. I was very familiar with many of the common problems people deal with when setting up a blu-ray for their machine, but I felt that my technical skills would help me surpass these issues. I knew that the firmware would need to be updated and that window did not support blu-ray playback and thus I would have to use a 3rd party software to actually watch blu-rays. After reading a few of the other reviews I saw that this unit came with software and I figured that although I am not a fan of cyberlink software, I could deal with it if it would work. As it turns out my specific set-up does not work with the provided Cyberlink software and like many other reviewers I would need to purchase the latest Cyberlink DVD 12 software for eighty bucks. To hell with that i said and decided to do some research on freeware that would allow one to view blu-rays without having to pay for the software. After exhaustive research I was able to configure my computer with the aid of 4 different software 1 to enable to codec, 1 to play it, 1 to remove copy protection, and 1 to configure all of the micro settings between the various programs. When all is said and done the blu-ray's play but will skip and sometimes audio/video will de-sync. Now considering the number of solutions required to get the blu-ray to play its difficult to say if the problem is software or Hardware(my machine was top of the line 4 years ago so it might not be powerful enough to decode a 1080p image properly).

To sum it up, the drive appears to be excellent. The problem is that it is more convenient to download video's from your favorite P2P site than it is to get a real blu-ray movie to play from your device.

If you're considering this drive to play Blurays on your PC or HTPC, STOP. I picked this drive because it came bundled with bluray player software. However, the included software, PowerDVD 9 is JUNK. It will not play any bluray produced after 2010, even with updates, unless you pay an extra $80 to upgrade to Power DVD 12.

Read reviews on the Power DVD software. This is a continual cycle that the software maker profits from. Every year they come out with a new version and require you to 'upgrade' to keep playing the latest blurays.

Save yourself some time and money and just pay the extra $$ for a stand alone bluray player now. It's the only option until microsoft sorts out the legal issues of playing blurays in media center.

This bulk drive came with the power cables and software mentioned in previous reviews. It's an easy switch with an existing drive, and Vista and Windows 7 64-bit have native drivers for it, and works great with software like AnyDVD HD. Very much recommended if you want to read but not write Blu-ray discs.
