Good features and performance, poor reliability
on November 11, 2013
I have owned this unit for approximately 3.5 years with light use (~4 loads/week). I have been happy with the features and performance, except that the door seal builds up gunk and odors if not cleaned regularly. Also, laundry will mildew if left in the machine for more than a couple of hours after the end of the cycle. From my limited research, these seemed like common problems with front loaders back in 2010, so I wasn't concerned. The other problem I've encountered is that the detergent dispenser drawer seems poorly designed, because if you attempt to fill the bleach compartment, bleach spills out down the front of the machine. I'm not sure if I have a faulty dispenser, but I hardly ever use bleach, so I haven't bothered to fix this problem. FWIW, I have not seen some problems others have had, such as water spilling from the door seal drain and loud noises during spin cycles.
I would have recommended this machine until yesterday, when the unit suddenly started spewing water from underneath the top cover. Lots of water. Luckily, I was nearby and noticed it in time to shut it down and unplug it before much damage was done. It's out of warranty, so I removed the top cover and quickly discovered a massive hole in the rubber hose that connects the cold supply line to the main wash detergent dispenser. The OEM replacement hoses are absurdly expensive and appear to be poor quality seam-welded construction - lo and behold, the rupture occurred on the seam. I just went to the hardware store and got a 6' length of braided reinforced hose to replace all 4 of the inner hoses for about $5. That should fix the problem, but if I hadn't been standing right there, the water leak could have easily shorted various electrical connections inside the machine and started a fire. Major safety hazard.
