Top review from the United States

An interesting modern version of the 1928 Paul Leni/Conrad Veidt silent film. The makeup is less extreme, but just as suggestive and effective. The film follows the 1928 film closely, but spends much more time at the carnival scenes than did the silent film. Dea is just as beautiful, but she always seems to be smiling. The evil countess tells Gwenpalyn that “she is as ugly on the inside as he is on the outside.” AND she more than proves it too him.

I missed the scene (in the 1928 film) where Dea touches his mouth and instantly understands his emotional pain. The look on her face was perfect. The film is in French with English subtitles. I liked it, though not as much as the 1928 silent.
