--------
* you might need to purchase a power cable adapter (details below)
* device installs easily, is quiet, and works well with all DVDs, blu-rays, 3D blu-rays I threw at it.
* review does NOT include the PowerDVD software provided with the device. (used ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre instead)
IMPORTANT: this is a Blu-ray READER. I saw people complaining they cannot write with the device. If you need something to WRITE blu-rays or DVDs, this device is NOT for you.
Test Environment:
-----------------
* Win7 64bit home PC (Intel Q6600 Core2 quad 3GHz, 8GB RAM, NVidia 460GTX)
* regular movie DVDs (NTSC), 2D and 3D blu-rays
Details:
--------
I purchased the drive to add blu-ray reading capability to my PC which already has a LITE-ON DVD reader/writer installed. The device was factory packaged in a sturdy box inside a frame of eggshell cartons which provided good protection. The box contained:
* LITE-ON SATA blu-ray reader drive (factory mounted with black front bezel)
* 4 screws
* standard length SATA data cable
* DVD with software
* user guide
* silver front bezel (to replace the black factory mounted bezel if needed)
Installation:
-------------
installation was very easy. I simply opened up my computer case, and screwed the device into an empty full size bay. The SATA cable was long enough to reach from the second bay from the top of my medium tower case (Antec 900) to the farthest end on the motherboard where the SATA port I wanted to use is located. The cable should be long enough for most applications. If you, however, are using a full-size tower like e.g. a Coolermaster HAF or Antec 1200, you should check whether the regular SATA data cable is long enough.
IMPORTANT:
check whether your computer's power supply has a SATA power plug available to use for the blu-ray reader. If not, you need to purchase an adapter cable (to be able to use the "regular" power plugs in your computer):
adapter cable 4-pin molex (female) to SATA
for example: "StarTech 6in 4 Pin Molex to SATA Power Cable Adapter" from Amazon)
I just went to our local electronics store to get one ($2.99)
Getting Started:
----------------
Once the bluray-reader was installed, my system booted without problems, and the device showed up correctly in the SATA boot menu. My OS (Win7 64 bit) loaded without problems as well, and installed drivers for the device. I went to the LITE-ON website, downloaded their firmware update utility, and updated the firmware.
RECOMMENDED:
At the time of purchase the drive came with outdated firmware. Go to the Lite-On website[...] select your country, and click on "Download". Select "Optical Storage", then "iHOS104". Then click on "Utilities", and get their "SmartPack" automated firmware upgrading utility.
The utility tries to install itself to run each time at Windows start. Disable that option in the utility since you don't need to run it frequently.
Then upgrade your firmware.
(I didn't try using the device with its existing firmware. It might work just fine. My personal experience though is to always update firmware/drivers/etc)
Using the device:
-----------------
I didn't install the software that came with the device, but used ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre instead which I already had. I tried out several DVDs and blu-rays, and had no problems. The device is fast, and very quiet. I did not experience stoddering, or any other visual/audio impediments. The device stays cool even after several hours of playing.
The device also works well with 3D blurays (you need a 3D capable video card/tv for that).
Overall after using the device frequently within the last 2 days, my experience is very positive. If anything to the contrary happens, I'll update this review.
Update:
The drive also works well in my new Intel i7-based system (on an ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe motherboard connected to a SATA 2 port. I didn't try it with the SATA 3 ports). During the 3 weeks of using the blu-ray reader in my new system, I have happily no problems to report.
Update 08/20/2012:
The drive still works fine. It is now installed in the top slot of a Coolermaster HAF X case, and the cable IS long enough to reach to the SATA ports on the motherboard (EVGA Z68 FTW). I have used the drive to watch DVDs, blu rays, 3D blu rays (note: NOT with the software that came with the unit), and also for gaming without problems. Alltogether I am very happy with my purchase.
Overall very good product, but I would expect a blu-ray player to play blu-rays right out of the box instead of needing a driver update. I would recommend this product but also advise that an internet connection is required.
Don't know if this is Win7 related or not. Since others here have complained I would stay clear of this drive if you are planning on running in Win7. Price is excellent but, what good is it if it doesn't work?
I will contact Lite-On for a replacement.
A lot of reviews claim the added software only supports 2 channels, but I assure you that this software is properly handling 6 channels. The software does display a scrolling message that states: "OEM 2CH" in the corner of the skin but it actually plays 5.1. I have tested and experimented with my sound system by muting the front channels and even the center to be sure, the conclusion was that I received the proper bass from the sub and the proper ambient sound from the rear channels. No voices or sounds from the foreground where audible during this test, just accent music and spacious surrounding sounds. Perhaps this was fixed with the large software patch that I downloaded on the first night I installed this drive, but I assure you that I have never experienced 2 channel audio from using the complementary software.
-Ultra quiet
-Fantastic complementary Cyberlink PowerDVD software worth the price of this item all by itself.
-Comes with a straight SATA 18" cable
-Needs a SATA power connection too, so make sure your power supply has a free one or get a molex 4 pin splitter
-This drive is about 1" deeper than common dvd drives but still fit in my compact micro ATX tower with only a bit of frustration (Just connect the cables to the drive first and thread them through the opening then connect to the mobo and psu).
-Works great with XP SP3 (and SP2)
-Came with a semi-gloss textured silver face plate and a glossy black face plate
*NOTE* Needed a 96 MB. Software update to play most new Blu-rays. (Even with dial up this wasn't that bad) So if your new blu-rays only play the previews and not the feature or nothing at all or if the sound only works then just restart your computer gain access to the net and start the player program and search for an update.
**NOTE** Not all blu-rays function with the control of the mouse, you can use the keyboard arrow and enter keys or the remote control (if you have one) to navigate the menu for the movie.
