About the Author

I was only ten when my grandfather died, but I remember loving him very much and enjoying his company. When I read the stories in this book, written by my grandfather's second wife, Pat Carr, they vividly brought back the memories of him. I could "hear" him saying some of his favorite phrases, and "see" the look on his face! My father was a lot like his father, and carried on many of the same traditions, like singing a little ditty when he was being devilish, or making my sister and I mind by just speaking our names in a certain tone. I enjoyed editing and retyping these stories from Pat, and I hope you enjoy reading the tales of a farm wife and landlady. Nicki Carr Tiffany, May, 2009

I found the book to be a bit of a revelation. With my parents and grandparents having brought me up near by in the same time frame, this memoir put every day life, particularly rural family life from the not so distant past into detailed perspective. The re-telling of Patricia Carr's memoirs through the eye's of her grandaughter puts a unique and touching perspective on the times and lives of the family. It is always a surprise to see, hear, and feel what life was like and how much we take for granted today. A good read and highly recommended.

THIS BOOK, LIFE FROM THE BIG APPLE, ETC. WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE. ONE DOES GET INSIGHT INTO LIFE IN THE BIG APPLE FOR A STRUGGLING ACTRESS BUT.. WHEN PAT LEFT NY FOR MARRIAGE TO FARMER BILL IN ALBION NY.THE TRUE STORY OF LIFE IN APPLE COUNTRY UNFOLDS. THIS WAS SO WELL WRITTEN BY PAT IN HER MEMOIRS THAT I COULD CONJURE UP THE IMAGES OF ANY GIVEN SITUATION. ALSO BACAME AWARE JUST HOW LABOR INTENSIVE FARM LIFE CAN BE; FINANCIAL SURVIVAL IS SUBJECT TO WEATHER AND MARKET CONDITIONS AND HIRED WORKERS AVAILABILILTY. THIS STORY IS AN INTIMATE DESCRIPTION OF HOW PAT AND BILL CONFRONTED EACH AND EVERY FACET OF FARMING AND THEIR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. GLAD THE RELATIVES SHARED THIS STORY.
I LIVE IN ROCHESTER WHICH IS A CITY AND MY LIFE EXPERIENCE WAS FAR DIFFERENT FROM THE FARM LIFE EVEN THOUGH WE ARE ONLY SEPARATED BY LESS THAN 40 MILES. THE 'COUNTRY' WAS A PLACE WE MAY HAVE TRAVELLED FOR LEISURE ON A SUNDAY RIDE , PERHAPS TO BUY SOME APPLES OR OTHER PRODUCE NOT KNOWING JUST WHAT OCCURRED TO GET THESE ITEMS TO MARKET.
WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK READILY TO ANYONE WHO WANTS THE 'FARM' EXPERIENCE IN A WELL WRITTEN , AND OFTEN HUMOUROUS ACCOUNT AND THE INGENUITY APPLIED FOR SUCCESS.

It's a very great book. It has a lot of good information about the Pillars House in Albion, NY and the people that lived there.
